Diamond Back Racer

Diamond Back Racer

This car was hand crafted by Webelo 1 Scout Dillon B. of Maumee pack 199. His car design started as a rocket ship (with rocket into scouting being a slogan this year,) but once he had made the initial cuts on the table saw, he noticed how much the front resembled a snakes head. The rest,as they say, is history. Dillon spent over 5 hours in hand sanding alone, rounding the body and choosing to try and mimic the look of a cobra's head in the back. After that he google searched snacks until finding the one whose head most resembled the one he had created. That's when he decided his car was going to be a diamond back rattle snake. He sketched out the design in pencil then went back and painted, again using Google images as a guide. In the end he still want happy with the results. After watching a few utube tutorials he was ready to try the "snake skin effect." He perfected the technique with some black spray paint, a bit of mesh material, and a few practice sticks. When he was happy (and confident) he applied the black snake skin you see over his original painting. When he was happy with the look of it he moved on to speed. It was at that point Dillon discovered his car only weighed 1.8 oz. Realizing the store bought weights wouldn't fit on his car, and not wanting to interfere with his design, Dillon reached out to his Cub Scout Master Glenn S. After some discussion the Dillon decided to hollow out his car and with Glenn's hello was able to melt and fit enough lead to bring his car's weight up to 4.9 oz. When pack race day came Dillon not only took 1st place for design, but had the 3rd fastest car in his Webelo den. Dillon and his Diamond Back Racer went on to win First Place in the Swan Creek District Pinewood Derby in the design category. When asked Dillon said "I can't believe I won, there were so many cool cars here. I hope I make it back next year."
