Rebuilding Continues at Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch

As a writer for Boys’ Life magazine, I’ve been lucky to go on some cool adventures. One of the best was a trip back in 2008 to Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch, a high-adventure, backpacking-oriented BSA camp near Walsenburg, Colo.

Last summer, a devastating wildfire ripped through the Spanish Peaks area, forcing the camp to close down for the rest of 2013. But the Boy Scouts don’t just sit back and let things like this happen.

Not long after the fire, donations and offers to help began pouring in. Fund-raisers were organized. Cleanup crews were organized. Special Spanish Peaks recovery T-shirts were produced, and the proceeds went to — what else? — the recovery fund.

Scouts and Scouters have assembled at SPSR regularly to get the place back up and running.

The work isn’t yet done, but the Sante Fe Trail Council and friends of Scouting are doing their best to get this great camp up and running as soon as possible.
