8 Variations on Classic S’Mores You’ll Want to Try

Cub Scouting is a time when, among other things, boys across the nation become budding pros at squishing roasted marshmallows between two graham crackers with chocolate in order to make the ultimate outdoorsy treat. It’s the classic camp fire culinary tradition from New York to L.A. and everywhere in between. That said, for National S’Mores Day, we thought we’d add a little bit of a spin on the classic treat beloved by Scouts all over the country. The internet is simply awash in dozens, if not hundreds of variations on ways to make the iconic messy dessert, but the problem is many of the ones we’ve discovered, while seemingly delicious, might take a bit more effort and know-how, not to mention an industrial kitchen to pull them off. We wanted to focus on some simpler, handy variations of the S’More that you can do with your Cub Scouts at an activity or a campout. With that in mind, here are 8 ideas to try something a little different with your humble campfire S’More.

S’more Skillet Dip

Cast Iron-Smores

This ingenious way to enjoy S’Mores is perfect for a night in at home, but it’s also a handy dandy way to Cowboy up on your next campout. Layer a cast iron skillet with chocolate chips and marshmallows, and set it right on the hot coals (adults only, please). Then when it’s hot, and the tips of the marshmallows are nice and roasted, it makes the perfect S’Mores dip. Just make sure you have plenty of graham crackers to scoop up the gooey goodness. Check out the full recipe and how-to (plus more gorgeous photos) at the Dessert For Two blog.

Peanut Butter S’More

You can take this one a couple of different ways. Spreading regular old peanut butter on the cracker is a great way to keep the chocolate bar from sliding off. But for an even quicker and richer combo, use a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup

Peppermint Patty S’More

It’s the same concept with the Peanut Butter Cup, but use a chocolate-covered peppermint patty. Or shove a Junior Mint into the marshmallow before you skewer it on the roasting stick. Now we’re talking!

Tinfoil Baked S’More Pies

You’ve had tinfoil dinners right? Well, here’s an idea for a tinfoil dessert you can make for your next camp out! All you need is some puff pastry along with the classic S’More ingredients. Make the hand-pies in advance and wrap them up in tinfoil, then bake them in the coals of your camp fire. It might take some practice, but that’s part of what makes it fun! Here’s a recipe for S’More Pies from the food blog, The Gunny Sack, and if you try it with tinfoil and hot coals, let us know how it turns out!

S’More Cones

This is great for younger Scouts especially, just because it’s a bit easier to keep all the gooey all together. A sugar cone stuffed with chocolate chips and topped with a roasted marshmallow seems like the perfect solution to have all the fun with half the mess. Not to mention that eating a S’More like an ice cream cone is a pretty fun method. Just maybe with less licking, OK?

S’More Fluffer Nutter

The classic sandwich of peanut butter and marshmallow fluff that’s practically a childhood staple in parts of the country, deserves a chocolatey twist to make it S’More better (is that a phrase??). Add Nutella or your favorite kind of chocolatey spread to your ‘Fluffer Nutter’ sandwiches and you have a fire-free version of S’Mores you can pack for a day hike or Cub Scout outing.

Rice Krispie S’Mores

Rice Krispie treats come marshmallow ready. Toss in some graham cracker bits or graham-flavored cold cereal with chocolate chips and your ready to roll! Speaking of roll, you could make these fun S’More + Rice Krispie pinwheels too. The blog, Mom on Timeout, has a great how-to recipe you can try.

Banana S’Mores

While it’s not exactly a healthy alternative, banana does add a kick of fruity flavor to the classic S’More combo. Bananas and chocolate are already perfect companions, but adding roasted marshmallow to the mix, scooping it up with a crispy graham cracker just seems like the best thing ever. S’More please! There are so many ways to enjoy S’Mores. Perhaps the best is sticking with the tried-and-true classic recipe, but who’s to say that adding toasted coconut or trying one with white chocolate shouldn’t be part of the experiment.
