Three Peaks, One Week

Four Scouts from Troop 158 in Jefferson, Ga., climbed Grays Peak (14,270 feet), Torreys Peak (14,267 feet) and Longs Peak (14,255 feet) over a period of seven days last summer.

“Grays and Torreys peaks were nearby and close to one another, so we made the most of it by summiting both in one day,” says 15-year-old Life Scout Cory McClung.

The real chore was Longs Peak. The trek began at 2 a.m. and ended at the summit at 9 a.m. Over seven days, the boys hiked more than 42 miles and gained more than 11,500 feet in elevation.

“The most satisfying part was being on the summit,” says 17-year-old Eagle Scout Blair Buffington. “We were way above the clouds and the view was unbelievable.”

I went on this trip with these boys but did not do the climbs. What they accomplished is really amazing. They are an inspiration to the younger boys in the troop. These young men have set some high standards and goals for the younger boys coming up through the ranks.

Troop 158 never ceases to amaze me with what they accomplish! For the troop’s size and size of the community, they continue to produce a high number of eagle scouts! The troop has been so fortunate to have FANTASTIC LEADERS that give up their valuable time to make these adventures possible!!

how did the boys prepare for the trip and hikes??

    • The guys began doing day hikes in Georgia as early as 6 months prior to the trip. They all were in good shape…all ran track\cross country, played tennis, and soccer. Also rode bikes and did stadium stairs prior to the trip. The big keys were making sure everyone was properly hydrated before each hike and spending a few days in the higher elevation prior to attempting 14,000+ feet.

  9. You guys are amazing. So proud of all of your accomplishment. Everything that you have learned will take you anywhere in the world.

  10. Awesome job guys!
