When you’re attempting a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail, it pays to Be Prepared.
Charlie Timberlake and Randy Wright, a pair of Eagle Scouts who are now nearing the end of a monster trek up the Appalachian Trail, recently faced one of their biggest challenges: Hurricane Irene.
When they heard about the approaching storm, the duo put together back-to-back 17-mile days in order to reach a shelter before the storm arrived. A raging river, swollen to impassable proportions due to heavy rains, changed all that.
