How to Keep Spiders as Pets

Spiders can make fascinating pets. Here are a few steps to get you started keeping spiders.

spider-550

Step 1: Catch a spider

Spiders are all around us, indoors and out, so they’re not hard to find. Some species can bite and a few are venomous. Learn about dangerous spiders in your area before heading out. It’s easy to safely catch a spider by using a small jar. Gently coax it into the jar using the lid. Spiders will eat each other, so keep only one per jar.

Step 2: Prepare a cage

Large spiders do well in the inexpensive plastic terrariums available from pet stores. Smaller ones can be kept in jars or plastic containers if air holes are drilled into the lid or sides. Be sure the holes are small enough to prevent escape.

Potting soil makes good cover for the cage bottom. Sticks, dead leaves or artificial plants provide structure for hiding, climbing and webbing.

Step 3: Water

Depending on the size of the spider, anything from a plastic bottle cap to a small bowl can serve as a water dish. Spiders also drink water sprayed on webbing, but you should never allow the cage to become damp.

Step 4: Feeding

Offer insect prey once or twice a week. Crickets are available from pet shops, or you can collect insects outdoors if no insecticides have been sprayed in the area.

Step 5: Observing

Watch your spider and take notes on its behavior. You won’t believe what happens in the spider’s web until you’ve visited it yourself!

PREFERRED PETS

Not all spiders do well in captivity. Active hunters are usually easier to keep than web builders. Here are a few that make good pets.

Tarantulas: Some species exceed 10 inches in legspan. They’re by far the most popular pet spiders and can be bought in pet stores.

Wolf Spiders: Some can be more than three inches in legspan. Large specimens do best in terrariums with lots of floor space.

Jumping Spiders: Although small and rarely exceeding half an inch, their jumping ability is amazing. Many species are brightly colored and can easily be kept in jars.

Fishing Spiders: In captivity, these large spiders appreciate vertically arranged pieces of bark for climbing. They’re very fast, so use caution when capturing them.

Grass Spiders: These spiders build funnel-shaped webs in grass, bushes and on buildings. In captivity, they will build extensive webs inside their cage.

We find wolf spiders in our house all the time!!!
    They’re disgusting😱

  60. That sounds cool. All spiders are venomous, only two in America can break your skin

    • I love wolf spiders!

      • False. Even orb weavers can break skin. Only two north American spiders have a venom potent enough to seriously harm humans, however, the black widow and brown recluse. Fortunately, an antivenin is easily available for both and they’re fairly skittish spiders.

    • They eat things like mosquitoes and flies, so even if they are disgusting to you, they eat things that are more gross and hazardous and should be treated with kindness. Because spiders are awesome, man.

I found spider eggs and specific care till they are older?

    • Jumping spiders need at least a foot of space to excercise or they will die earlier than they should. DO NOT keep your jumping spider in a jar. Make sure you also make sure to get a docile one as a pet (one that you can hold for more than 3 secs), otherwise they will die from stress.

  62. Lol I keep black widows.

    i love jumping spiders

    • Don’t buy a spider as a pet then…

    • To Drastic lie, some spiders are venomous and most are not because only 2 venomous spiders live in the United States of America, the black widow and the brown recluse! P.S, spiders are most likely to be more afraid of you than you are afraid of THEM!! ALSO, did you know that spider silk can be stronger than STEEL!!!!? I use to be afraid of spiders and I am a little bit still but if you are afraid of spiders then you should just learn more about spiders!!! That helped me a lot

    • Learn about them as much as possible. The more you know, the less there is to be afraid of. Did you know that there’s a type of spider that lives most of its life underwater? That tarantulas aren’t poisonous? That wolf spiders care for their young until they can fend for themselves? After awhile and a bit of exposure it won’t bother you at all.

    • if you want to get over the fear i suggest start with a daddy long legs. they are harmless

  67. spiders are lame. people who like spiders are deformed and wierd

  137. Tree spiders (spiders that climb) can live in a tall jar with sticks. Ground spiders can live in a critter keeper with dirt. They would both like mealworms. For water a bottle cap will do. You can add bark, twigs,or any other places to hide or decorations

  142. Jumping spiders probably shouldn’t be kept in jars- unless you’re going to be taking them out and playing with them every day. If you prefer to keep your jumper as a display spider I recommend getting a larger plastic cage for it to run around in. If jumping spiders don’t get enough exercise, they can die!

  146. So I have a wolf spider in a jar it’s not a huge jar but it’s a good size jar do I need bigger

    • Yes

    • Pet stores have crickets of all sizes. The spider should eat prey no larger than 3/4 the size of its abdomen. If it’s a very small spider, you can try pinhead crickets or small crickets.

    • if you don’t know what to feed small spiders try mealworms they are cheap at pet stores just keep them in the fridge so they don’t become beetles!!!😲

Just caught a wolf spider and i have it living in a plastic container it has being acting strange waiting and when i open the lib goes crazy and when i try to add tgings to its plastic cage it stays away from what ever i put in the cage what should i do

  154. ok so my dog attacked a little house spider it lost 1 leg fell in water went into what i can only call a coma woke up made it a nest put it in very lively then suddly just went into a ball its legs are still moving. what should i do i consider letting it go but it wont come out the nest i dont want to pick it up as it may get more fragile

    • That’s too bad…don’t release him/her they are dying. The best you can do is just keep them in a small cage, don’t feed them. If they live for more than a day or two feed them fruit flys. Good luck 🙁

  155. Did you know spiders eat any insex insep for Other daddy long legs

    • phantomwarlord // May 2, 2014 at 12:52 am // Reply

dude when it comes to baby spiders you just got to let them go.

      • Yeah usually they eat their mothers hahaha nature works this way baby. But sometimes they just go adventure for themselves anyway…

    • any spider likes to eat insects like little flies they like dark places and to be left alone most of the time if you are keeping your spider inside you should make the home look like outside to make it feel safe. they drink water or blood from other insects. if you keep your spider in a tin or pastic box make sure there are holes but not to big because they might escape !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • DUD THAT IS AN HOURGLASS SPIDER THE ARE VENOMES NO JOKE JUST LET IT GO

  158. I wouldn’t mind keeping a spider if I haven’t already seen a 4-inch wolf spider.

  159. Why would you want to catch a spider? These spiders come from the wild. How would you like it if someone removed you from your home and trapped you in a jar? If you want a spider that badly, buy one. That way, you know you won’t be causing the spider any stress.

I have a jumping spider named Blackie. He lived in my house for several months before I captured him and made a habitat for him.I was afraid if I let him continue roaming the house someone would surly step on him. I have enjoyed the little rascal. He loves baby crickets and moths. He shed his skin once and has made a large resting sac. He spent 14 days in his resting sac and I worried about him but he is okay.he was shedding his skin.

  162. i got a tegenaria duellica. called her Doris.
Shes already build an awesome web

  163. I’m planning to catch a black widow. Where can I mostly find them?

    • They like dark damp places. If you have an outside shed you probably have one or two under something in there. Under washer machines, or any appliance that hasn’t been moved for a while is a good place to look too.

    • I would advise you to take caution & wear gloves when catching, feeding, and holding a black widow. Their bite = an emergency room trip.

    • phantomwarlord // May 2, 2014 at 12:57 am // Reply

ok first of all dont cach black widows there very poisinos and you can find them under rocks or under damp things

    • You can either buy one or if you live around the u.s. North area go in the deep forest and you could find one. They are not harmless unless you pinch a leg or mess with it. I hope this information helps you. Be safe.

  170. Me and my siblings catched 2 little spiders today how do we take care of them properly? Like, how can we make a suitable home for them in a container?

    • well you can keep them in two separate containers because if you keep them both in one container they will eat each other. Put some mud in the containers, make sure the containers have holes in them.put some twigs, grass and dead leaves. Make sure they have a little bit of water and feed them small insects like aphids or small bugs like aphids 2 times a week. Don’t kill the bugs just put them in and let the spider kill the bugs.

  171. To who ever has a black widow it is never a good idea to have one of them asa pet if you ever get bitten you should always get medical help because it is only a matter of time before you fall over and die

    • If you find or have a black widow then don’t worry because they rarely bite even if they do it’s rarely fatal🐜😲

  176. nightwing101 // December 1, 2013 at 3:04 pm // Reply

You may keep a spider as a pet and speaking from experience with many captive spiders a small spider can eat large things such as a jumping spider will eat crickets just make sure its in there diet . I mean I have made the mistake of feeding jumpy( my jumping spider) a worm not knowing jumpy needs to hunt in order to eat.

She built a network of webs in her habitat, which is a plastic container about a foot long and 8 inches wide. I have had her for almost 7 months now and she has shed several times. The exoskeleton is pretty awesome. I would love to get a Mexican Red Knee tarantula but my mother would kill it, me, or both if I brought one home.

  181. we bought a pink toe tarantula for my sons birthday gift, she is very beautiful. We live in Nebraska in the north part and I was wondering how to keep her warm . What would be the best way . Thanks for any advice you can give me. Sincerely Pinktoes

    • pinktoes, you can buy heat mats that you place under terrariums and viv’s. You plug them into the wall and set the temperature to what ever the animal being kept prefers, and place the mat directly under the terrarium or viv. They’re not too expensive neither, should be able to find them in a good pet or reptile store. Hope this helps 🙂

  182. I have a black widow in a reptile cage is it ok?

    • NO!!! These are the most deadly spiders in America. Get rid of it quickly. Btw, They are master escape artist and can squeeze through extra small spaces so be careful. Let it go far from your house

Can you keep a daddy long leg for a pet?

    • You can. The idea that they are the most venomous spiders but their mouths are just too small to delver a bite, is a myth. They have similar oral structures to the Brown Recluse. They have what is called “uncate” fangs where a tooth meets the fang like a pair of tongs come together. And as gruesomely seen, the brown recluse is capable of packing a major bite. So why wouldn’t a daddy long-legs spider be able to? And as for their venom, it has not been tested to be classified as more lethal than any other breed.

  255. dear “ColoradoMtMan” you would house the camel spider the same as any other of the same type. or just the same as any other spider. just keep it safely in a roomy container with its basic needs for living. also as you might already know, camel spiders looove small geckos, and other lizards. that would be like a meal from heaven if u found a small lizard for your spider.

  256. dear ” tahunuva ” since its a barn spider, the insects you just listed would be perfect for feeding your spider. just remember that some of those insects like the ants can get together and take your spider down. actually, one ant, if its lucky, can bight the spider and temporarily paralyze it. then it can kill it. so be careful about the type of ants you get for your spider meal.

daddy longlegs also aren’t spider, they are their own class known as ‘opilliones”. also you can feed the aphids.

  294. I found a spider in my living room. I’m not quite sure what it is. It looks like a jumping spider. I would say it’s about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch. I’m not sure whether to keep it until it gets warmer outside or let it go in the cold or let it go on a plant in my house. What should I do?

    • letting it outside in the cold is the best Idea, but don’t be worried about it dying in the cold cause most spiders that have that over a year to live will hibernate.

  295. I can’t tell if my spider is a brown recluse or a wolf spider

    • spider lover // February 1, 2012 at 3:57 pm // Reply

the brown recluse has a violin marking on it’s back, but if you still can’t tell wolf spiders are bigger and have more hair, in fact the brown recluse doesn’t have any hair at all on it’s body. If it turns out to be a brown recluse don’t let it crawl on you it’s bite will make your skin rot, however if it is a wolf spider it’s bite will be painful but you’ll be fine, I once had a wolf spider and I played with her every day:)

  296. How long does a brown recluse live

  297. I have 5 jumping spiders. They are amazing! I fed them a moth the other day and it was so awesome when it attacked it. By the way does anyone know how long jumping spiders can live without food and how long it can live without water?

  298. I found three baby wolf spiders at the park. Im going to bring my jar this time and catch them. What happens if you put them with a wild house gecko, around two inches?

    • Spider Lover // January 9, 2012 at 3:42 am // Reply

Putting spiders in with geckos or other lizards will result in spiders becoming dinner for the reptile. Think about what you feed creatures you intend to put together. So you don’t have unfortunate accidents.

JJ, sweety. Don’t worry about spiders being taken from their habitat. Most spiders live in and around human homes already. In fact by humans caring for them they live a much better and often much longer life- being regularly fed and cared for. And no worries about them being taken from “their families”. Female house spiders do not often care for their young and in fact die after laying the egss, but those that do care for them will often carry them with her on her back anyways.

I gave my wolf spider a shallow dish which I filled with water, and put a piece of soaked sponge in the middle, cause Im pretty sure they drink it both ways. also, Make sure the cricket is his size or smaller or else it might be too strong for him. They only eat once or twice a week and can stay alive without food for quite a while so dont feel bad if u forget every once in a while.

to tanner: well if your wolf spider isn’t eating then it might not be hungry but if its abdomen is small then it just isn’t eating probably because it is scared what i suggest you do is let it go and try to find a new one. to pookie: i think u shouldn’t worry because jumping spiders arent like wolf spiders where the baby wolf spiders climb onto the mothers back jumping spiders can just be kept and when they hatch its fine u dont have to feed them yet, when the start to become cannibals then give them pinheads and fruit flys if any one has anymore questions i can help u with them

I have had jumping spiders my whole life! they are very cool to watch especially when feeding. I’ve kept wolf spiders also but they are still not as cool as jumping spiders. Once I had a daring jumping spider in a 2 gallon tank with a wolf spider…. The wolf spider was 3 inches and got eatin by the 1 inch jumping spider… The jumping spider almost got bit but got away with it. I highly recomend jumping spiders as pets as long as it is in a tank at least 2 gallon depending on the size.

  420. We have five tarantulas. They are fun to watch and easy to take care of. We feed them crickets from the pet store.

  421. I love spiders

  422. garden spider is the best pet i’ve ever had! it has never bitten me and the way it wraps the insects is really interesting to watch! gud luck to spider lover!!!!

my mother REALLY doesnt want me to get a pet spider. even if i tell her its harmless she is creeped out.PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

  424. Just wanted to mention that really, a dish of water is probably a bad idea, particularly for smaller species. Apart from fishing spiders, which live most of their lives near and partially on the water, spiders can easily get ‘sucked in’ to a pool of water by the surface tension, and drown.

A better water source is a small piece of moist sponge (preferably new, and never one that’s been used with chemicals), a moist cotton ball, or the commercially available ‘water pillows’ used to give water to crickets (you can buy these at petshops, but honestly, sponges are cheaper).

Spiders make fun and fascinating pets (especially jumping spiders; they’ve got a lot of character), and it’d be a real shame to accidentally drown one =(

  425. chuahuaspider953, wolf spiders are not poisonous but they may bite if you make them feel threatened. It needs a cage about 15×30 cm. Hope this helps!

This sounds fun, since I really like bugs. Beetles are harder to keep though, because they die quickly if they aren’t in nature, so I think spiders would be great to have instead! Tarantulas, and Wolf Spiders are pousinus, though, so you need to be really careful with those.

My mom has outlawed the keeping of any spiders in the house because of my little sister, she claims to be “allergic” to them. (My mom thnks they scare her,) but I’m still going to try to do this anyway! (Maybe I can hide the bug container I’m using in my closet. It shouldn’t bother “Little Miss Allergic-To-Spiders” in there! Thanks for the great idea! Now does anyone know how to get rid of sisters?? 🙂 😉 🙂 😉 🙂 😉
