Learn Morse Code With This Morse Translator and Decoder

morse code translator chart for translating from the alphabet to morse code

Learning Morse code can be a fun and rewarding experience. It may seem daunting at first, but with practice, anyone can learn to interpret and transmit messages with dots and dashes.

Use this helpful tool to translate between Morse code and text. To begin, please enter words or Morse in the Input box and press Translate.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR USING THE MORSE CODE TRANSLATOR

How to translate Morse to text:

  • Enter Morse dashes or dots into the input box using period (.) and minus sign (-)
  • Morse letters must be separated by 1 space
  • Morse words must be separated by 3 or more spaces
  • You can use / to separate Morse words. There must be at least 1 space before and after each separator used

How to translate text to Morse code:

  • Enter text into input box
  • Characters that cannot be translated into Morse will be ignored
  • If both Morse and text is entered, the converter will assume Morse mode

The Morse Generator and Translator is based on code developed by Kurt Grigg.

WHAT IS MORSE?

Morse code is a method of communicating with a series of sounds or lights that can be understood only by someone who knows the code.

Each Morse symbol represents either a letter or number and is represented by a unique sequence of dots and dashes. The duration of a dash is three times the duration of a dot.

Samuel F.B. Morse invented a code that was used to send messages over electric telegraphs in the 1830s. The SOS distress signal — three dots, three dashes, three dots — proved to be a simple way to communicate in an emergency.

With the invention of the telephone (and, later, two-way radios and cellphones), Morse is nowadays used mostly just for fun by amateur radio operators. Certain amateur radio bands are still reserved for Morse code use.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORSE CODE?

One of the best ways to start learning Morse is to use an online translator like the one on this page. These tools give you the chance to practice and test your abilities.

A chart like this one can also help you learn Morse code by visualizing the dots and dashes on the letters of the alphabet:

mnemonics chart to help learn morse

A great way to practice is by listening to Morse transmissions on the radio. Many amateur radio operators still use Morse, and you can tune in to their transmissions and try to interpret the messages. You can also join a amateur radio club or group to practice with other enthusiasts.

Learning Morse may seem like an outdated skill, but it can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It can also be useful in emergency situations when other forms of communication are unavailable. With a bit of practice and dedication, anyone can become proficient and enjoy the thrill of transmitting and receiving messages in this classic code.

  122. i want to learn

  123. The timing and spacing of the code generator is plain awful! Using this code machine will make things far more difficult than they need to be.

  124. morse code should be learned by sound, alone. If you develop the habit of counting dots and dashes you will never progress beyond 5-10 wpm. And, speaking from experience, it is an extremely difficult habit to break. If anyone is serious about learning the code, consult the resources of the ARRL.

  125. I want to learn

  126. How can I download this software? Or buy an actual machine?

  127. excellent app for learning morse code …..

  128. This is a really great way to start learning. It does take a bit to get used to at first if you don’t knot anything about morse code, but you get there. I would suggest changing the font though, it took me a long time to figure out the different between a 0 and an O, so I kept getting the letter to morse translations wrong. Maybe add a thing as well that shows you how to format sentences? Like how to do spaces between words and letters or new lines and such.

    Suggestion for faster learning:
Allow response-interaction by pressing the key on the keyboard that corresponds to the Morse letter, instead of having to use the mouse to click the letter, then move on, which slows down the process.
    Otherwise, good work.

I still look at signs and read them in Morse or other items and read them in Morse. It is great.

Bad font choice, the difference between the number 0 and the letter O is not obvious at first glance. The random pattern needs to be tweaked so it doesn’t repeat the same letter twice, doesn’t pick numbers as often and gives a better spread of choices, I’ve noticed certain letters come up very rarely while others come up frequently, and this is after using this web app for months.

  204. I learned Morse and used it everyday in the military over 45 years ago and once learned & used is never forgotten. I wish you had something to copy.

I kinda wish I could check off which letters/numbers I want to practice. Obviously, numbers don’t need to be practices as often as letters :/

  212. This was great. It would be good if I could use the computer keyboard instead of mouse clicking. Then training your ear could be done “in the zone” without looking at the screen. Also, the noise characteristics should be customizable.

  508. Managed to learn morse code in under an hour with this. Cheers.

  509. It will sound more like real Morse code if you would change the frequency of the sound to 750-800 Mhz.

Listen to the samples here to get an idea of code being sent at 7.5 wpm (the code character is sent at a speed of 18-20 wpm, but slowed down to a message speed of 7.5 wpm — this is called the Fransworth method), which is the speed requirement for sending in the new “Signalling” merit badge.

  510. The tone used for code is also weird. Listen to some code (cw) on the radio and adjust your tone to make it more authentic.

  511. The program is wrong. “..—” is not three. Three is “…–”

Pretty bad when the person programming things gets it wrong.

    • I found something. If u get a ..— in test 1, do 3 (…–), then from there on, it is back to 2 as the answer.

  512. It’s a good game.

  531. Had a real tough time with code as a Boy Scout years ago (never did get it!) but this is a fun way for an “old” guy to learn it. I will be on the air as soon as I finish building my MFJ Cub kit.

  532. this is easy!!

  533. There is a bug in this. The number “3” is displayed as 2 in morse code.

  534. just learned how to read binary time, this should be fun

  535. How do you do this?!?

  536. cool

  537. i kno morse code

This game i scool. it is kinda boring, but still cool

  542. game is horrible

  543. HEY HOW WAS YOU DAY MINE WAS GOOD

  544. its a great way to learn morse but its kinda boring

  545. Yes, di-di-dah-dah-dah is 2, not 3
This game looks like a good idea.
I hope some young kids like it and learn Morse.

  546. Nice idea…needs a little work. As mentioned dit dit dah dah dah is 2 not 3 are the program reports. It would be nice to be able to adjust the tone and keyboard entry would be good. Keep up the good work.

  549. Dear Boys’ Life,
I think that this game isn’t the best. I’m sorry. I just don’t like it.
    -Unknown

  550. Don’t be discouraged by this game. It’s a game and not a Morse course. It reminds me that I started to learn the code in Scouts but got distracted by building rockets! Much later I got my “ticket”, still poor at Morse (hence GW7 prefix).

  551. this is kool, but it aint my type of game. i stink at memorizing stuff. it sometimes is hard for me, sometimes isnt; depends.

  552. I don,t get it because it,s hard!!!!!!!

  553. I’m a Ham Radio operator, operating with a General Class, FCC, license, but I don’t
know Moris Code… Is there an actual Moris Code Machine, like the one depicted
on this website? If so, where can I purchase one!!!

  554. It’s Cool but, hard to understand. I hope I learn to decode it soon.

  557. hi this is a good way to learn but i cant remeber any of it so i think u could make a song or a catch phrase to make more people remember it and i think its a fun game but most kids arent remembering it so ya i think u need a song or a catch phrase for it

There is a problom: The Y looks like V.

  559. Hey! great tool! I’m learning a lot!

    One problem:
Sometimes when it puts out the number 2 for you to guess, it says, sorry the answer is 3, when it was indeed 2!!!!

Other than this problem, it is cool!

  560. My scouts loved it. Showed it to son-in-law who is a Ham Radio Operator and wants to learn Morse. All kids respond to activities in various ways as adults do. I used it to fulfill a requirement for the Communicator Webelo Pin

  561. Hey this is cool! This is really helping me to memorize the code fast.

  562. is the Morse code of number 3 is ..—? I thought that is number 2. I found it different…

  563. What a great way to “remember” the code. I don’t use it much, so it’s great to have a place to practice. KB1ARM is right, if you really want to “get your speed up” get on the air and pound away!

i found a glitch if you do test 2 first and then without doing anything go to test 1 the letter is the same letter encoded

  565. The machine is cute. It would have been a real help to me when I was studying code for my Novice ticket in the early 90’s. But in all honesty there’s no substitute for the “real thing,” so get on the air and pound some brass!!!

  566. the morse code machine is awsome! I`m going to tell all my friends about it.

    Dear Boys’ Life,

I think that Morse code is a great skill to have. I also think that this program is quite good, except for a few errors: 2’s and 3’s get mixed up, both in coding and in decoding. Please correct this error soon.

  568. TESTING THE TEST

Really cool, except for one bug in the “listen and guess” test. Test 1 played and showed the Morse Code for 2 (..- – -) when it expected me to press the 3 button. As far as I can tell, Test 1 never actuall plays 3 (…- -) at all, though it does expect you to press the 3 button sometimes for the 2 code. It plays the correct code for 2 (..- – -), so its confusing when it comes to 2s and 3s, which seemed to happen very often.

Does it test “full stop,” “comma,” and “query”? They never came up for me and I went for about a thousand symbols on each test before getting tired. Also the letter “c” came up only once on each test, even though I say the other numbers and letters each about a half a dozen times or more, but that could have just been random chance.

(Reposted to clear up some ambiguous dashes)

  569. The old is back!! Imagine a nuclear war… everything devastated … we better learn this. 😉

  570. This is a very good way to learn Morse Code.

  571. This isn’t hard! If you just practice beeping in your name for a while each day, then move on to your families names and then more words and stuff, it really helps!

I think this tool is awesome, I can do all our names without thinking!

    Come on guys!

  572. Cback123’s Morse code thing says “hi”

  573. This is an important mode of communication. Something that shouldn’t be ignored or written off as ‘too hard’. While it is no longer required in the United States to know Morse Code to obtain your amateur radio operator license, it is still a great skill to get and keep. I got my amateur (or ‘ham’) license in 2000 and my one regret is I didn’t get it when I was younger so I could enjoy it more. Contact your local amateur radio club to learn more, or visit the American Radio Relay League to know more. A responsible Scout knows there is more than one way to communicate, especially if there is an emergency. Think about it.

  574. This was pretty cool, even though i only have a few words down. Ya never know, it might come in handy 1 day. Decifer this: …. ..

  575. Verygood instrument to beginers. Thankyou

Hey, guys! If you don’t know anything about Morse Code, just get a piece of paper and go to the Main Page and write all the letters of the alphabet and all the numbers except 10 and write down even the Fullstop, the Comma, and the Query. Then look at everyone’s Morse Code and write them down in the right places. Then go to Test 1 or 2. When it asks you to convert a letter or to find the right letter that goes with the code, look at your piece of paper, find the letter or code their asking for, and DO IT!!!!

    You’ll zip right through this.

    From,

    superspiderman

P.S:When you’re on Test 2, it never stops asking you questions.

P.S.S:Use the back of the piece of paper to write down information if nesscessary.

  577. this games deadsville!
