good job scouts (and parents)
In our pack it was always emphasized that the Pinewood Derby was a family activity and the Cub Scouts were not expected to build the car on their own. We even opened up our Boy Scout troop’s wood shop to assist those parents who were not so handy with tools. We always felt it was best when the Scout and the family could share in the pride of their creation.
Parental involvement is important. Need capitalize on this enthusiasm and get these creative car parents to help everyone think outside the block. We always made two cars parent and the scouts and if anyone needed help that was even better.
Wow…our young Scouts (and their assistants, aka parents) are more talented than I imagined…seems as if we’ve lost the spirit of Pinewood Derby, though.
“It’s not what the boy does to the block of wood but what the block of wood does for the boy.” Been there, done that… seems like too many of these were done for a boy instead of by a boy. FWIW…
Lots of talented dads out there.
My son will participate in his first Pinewood Derby tomorrow. From what I’ve seen in person and on this website, this is really about the parents making cars for the kids. Let’s be real, the parents did most of the work here and the kids *maybe* helped a little. I for one am trying to encourage learning and skill building instead of just showing off and winning.
