How to Make Twig Pencils
Twig pencils are fun, easy and cheap to make. And the expressions on your friends’ faces when you start scribbling with a stick will be writetious!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Pocketknife or utility knife
- Pruning clippers
- Drill and 3/32-inch bit
- Clamp
- Scratch awl or nail
- White glue
- 2mm-diameter drafting lead, 2B grade (at art or office supply stores)
- Adult permission or supervision
WHAT YOU’LL DO
STEP 1: Find a twig. Look for one with interesting color, texture or with a forked shape. (The length of the twig, though, must be straight.) Hold the twig as you would a pencil to find the right size. Use pruning clippers to trim away unwanted parts. Check the twig for bugs (you don’t want any).
STEP 2: Clamp the twig to the edge of a workbench or piece of plywood. Be careful! Too much pressure can crush the twig.
STEP 3: Use a scratch awl or the point of a nail to make a dent at the center of the twig’s end. The dent will become the starting point for the drill bit.
STEP 4: Drill to a depth of 1 to 1-1/4 inches. Make sure to keep both hands on the tool!
As you drill, you may need to back out the bit to clear wood chips from the drill’s flutes (its spiral grooves). To do this, stop the drill and scrub the bit with an old toothbrush.
STEP 5: Squirt a small puddle of glue on a scrap of wood or cardboard. Roll the end of the lead in the glue, then work it back and forth in the hole to spread the adhesive.
STEP 6: Trim the lead by breaking it sideways against the twig. Let the glue dry overnight.
STEP 7: Sharpen the pencil with your pocketknife or a sharp utility knife. Whittle away from your body, removing thin shavings as you work around the pencil. Use your imagination to personalize your pencil, or simply enjoy the colors and textures that nature provides.
This is sick!!
wow so cool very creative
WOW NICE
made 10 of them nice
Where do you get the graphite
nice instructions
How, did the step go
wowser
That’s what I’m sayin
Wow,that is so simple! I definitely plan to make one or more of those!
This was sooo cool
Soooo cooool.
WOW THIS LOOKS EASY IMMA GONNA DO THIS RIGHT AWAY
very cool
I wonder if this will catch on in Pencilvania.
Yeah I like pizza.
One of my jokes for the kids, The most common pencil used in school is the Number 2 pencil, Right? They agree. Then why isn’t Number 1? I usually give them a No. 1 pencil and sometimes a stick pencil with 2B lead. Michaels has that lead in the drafting section.
Made these at our last campout. They are very easy and the Bears loved them.
cool. now lets see you do it
Advisory Project: How to make pencils
I did this for my Bear Den and they loved it!! Plan on doing it for the new Bears to go with the Bear Claws adventure, good way for them to learn basic whittling skills. I had to buy the lead on Amazon, none of the craft stores around here had lead.
meh!
awesome
ijust learnd lashing i can probably combine two pencils
That’s so neet. My dad “wood” love it.
Wow!!!!!
He sounds like a sap to me.
It’s hard to shave a lead.
That’s cool
Now, where are the plans for the mechanical version?
This is cool
Lol
We shall get a patent. Mass produce them. Sell them commercially. We shall call them pencils.
LOL that would be funny
where do you get the led?
it tells you in the instructions-at art or office supply stores
Lead pencil refills. Walmart, staples etc
The key is to look in the drafting or art supply sections of craft and office supply stores. The 2 mm led is thicker than what goes in mechanical pencils. It is designed for use in lead holders. Mechanical pencil led would most likely break while you tried to insert it,
No lights needed for this project friend!
Have you tried making pencils out of Elder twigs? You can push a tent peg through the soft core of the Elder and then put a piece of willow charcoal into the hole it leaves.
Invisibly cool!
I’ll make some, and then bring them to school next year. 🙂
I will try this sounds fun
cool…gota try this.
Awsome
NICE THINKING PERSON
I will have to make these!
cool idea
i am totally going to try this out.
Awesome!
Ooh, I need more pencils for school” these are cool pencils. I think I’ll give ’em a try.
this may sound weird but im 11 yrs old and I made this my self and it was AWESOME
Wow
That sound like so much fun I’m totally going to try it
I would have to check the Guide to Safe Scouting to see IF a scout can use a drill, before I got started.
wow fantastic
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but lead that is only 1 1/4″ long basically means the pencil is worthless after one or two uses.
After you’ve made the pencil, practice your Woodcarving Merit Badge skills and carve a face in your new pencil. Always remember to use a sharp knife and wear safety gear.
Find the right size twig and the right size drill bit and you could also do this with a ballpoint pen refill for added fun.
If you scrape some of the paint off a number 2 pencil and soak it over night, you can seperate it length wise and the lead will come out easily.
wow thats pretty neat thanks
Where would I get the lead???
Office supply stores sell pencil lead refills for mechanical pencils
I would say any office supply store I would think the lead for a mechanical pencil or maybe a hobby or craft store “ac Moore, michaels
Any office supply store will have drafting-pencil leads. They’re a bit thicker than mechanical-pencil leads, about the size of an actual wood-pencil lead, in fact.
Office depot. Not lead. Graphite refills. Also any art supply. Not Michaels. I rec. Hobby Lobby.
staples has it to in arts and craft section
Ooooh nyc my friend didnt believe her eyes and she was lyk ‘andrea why you writin’ with a twig’ but i showed her the website

Does this really work? I hope it does, because this is a cute idea I like it.
🙂
Art supply stores carry large charcoal and graphite drawing sticks. You can even find white charcoal.
cool that rocks
coooool
im gonna try it
tried it didn’t work
That is pretty creative.
cool, i just might try this. before lead was used in pencils, ( today graphite ) they burnt the tip of the sharpened twig to make charcoal then they wrote with that. 🙂
lead is what we call graphite!(in pencils) 🙂
Thats pretty cool 🙂
How cool
What else can you use to make a pencil?
cool
I think that you could go to a writing supply store and buy the fattest “lead” (graphite) that you use to put into mechanical pencils for refills, that would work for these, wouldn’t it? These are very neat! Thanks for a lot of neat ideas for a variety of boys (and dads, and moms….)
looks cool I have to try it.
to put an eraser on it: take a eraser off another pencil and glue on twig pencil.
This looks fun. i’m going to try it
looks interesting to do
this thang is awesone
I’m gonna do this…oh and you could just remove the lead/graphite from a pencil. 1. remove the eraser 2. poke eraser end with nail 3. when lead starts to loosen, pull out from writing side….pretty simple
looks like fun
looks fun
Here is a eser way. Whittle a stick burn the end bingo you have a pencil. This is very cool. 🙁 :/ :p 🙂
Could you make a point and stick it in a fire?
Yes, but you would have to keep charring it.
It does not matter how hard it looks,it just matters how much fun you have making it
Made these a couple of weeks ago and the Cubs and Scouts really enjoyed making them. Will be making a lot of them for Christmas gifts.
its fun and esasy guys!!!!!!!!!!11
I wish i could make it but…
I’m going to do that with the arow i made in archery merit badge the arrow is long as a piece of paper

I mighr try this! Looks very cool!
I think I’ll try it some time looks cool!! 😎
i found a pack of 12 leads on sale for $8 but that didnt include shipping. thats sort of expensive for a twig pencil isnt it?
If the lead is loose just put some elmers glue in the hole first and let it dry for 1 day before sharpening. COOL!
it is hard to make
Well anonymous if you glue it the glue mite get all over the lead.
looks hard 🙁
cool:-)
I think it’s cool.
that might be much harde unless it in a stick maybe
Do you use lead or graphite?
lead- it says it in the directions
lead is graphite
Looks kool! it’s graphite lead right?
That is a really good idea! I have to share this with the other scouts!!! Looks fun…
