How to Buy a Good Pocketknife or Multitool

Opinel's No.07 My First Opinel Folding Knife

Opinel’s No.07 My First Opinel Folding Knife ($17, opinel-usa.com) is sharp but without a point. The 3.5-inch blade is made from Sandvik stainless steel, and it holds an edge. The outdoors version ($26, scoutshop.org) also has a built-in whistle to call for help in an emergency.

With proper training, many Scouts can use a knife — a valuable tool for camping or working on a whittling project. A multitool provides multiple blades and other tools. Examples are saws, drivers and even forks and spoons.

A knife is not a toy. If you’re a Bear, Webelos or Arrow of Light Cub Scout, earn your Whittling Chip. If you’re in Scouts BSA, earn your Totin’ Chip. Then you will know how to safely carry and use one of these tools.

CRKT Minimalist Drop Point knife

The CRKT Minimalist Drop Point ($36, crkt.com) has a 2-inch fixed blade with a tough handle that’s comfortable to hold. The carbon-steel blade sharpens quickly, and the half-ounce durable thermoplastic sheath has multiple mounting options.

KNIFE BASICS

There are several types of knives.

All-purpose folding pocketknives are common in Scouting. Most come with tools such as a can opener, screwdriver, tweezers and, of course, knife blades — all in one compact package. Though they can be extremely handy, a downside is the knife blade doesn’t lock into place, so it may fold up on your hand while you’re using it.

Lockbacks are simple folding knives with a single blade that can be locked. So you get the benefits of a sturdy fixed blade-style knife but in a convenient pocket-size package that can be folded open with just one hand.

Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman knife

Scouts have been using Victorinox Swiss Army knives for a long time. The Victorinox Swiss Army Huntsman ($50, victorinox.com), a multitool with first-aid functions, has a suite of transitional tools, including a can opener, scissors and tweezers — plus large and small blades, saw, awl, leather punch and more. It pretty much has everything you need.

Fixed blades, are no-nonsense knives with a beefy handle and stationary blade. If you need a knife to accomplish the everyday tasks you come across in the outdoors, from whittling on things and cutting materials to spreading peanut butter on your sandwiches, a short, no more than four-inch-long, fixed-blade knife will accomplish all of that. Avoid large sheath knives; they are heavy and awkward to carry.

You’ll also find specialty knives such as river rescue knives with serrated blades for slicing rope, whittling knives designed for carving wood, and multitools, which are compact, handheld tool boxes. Most are built around a pair of folding pliers.

Leatherman Sidekick

The Leatherman Sidekick ($70, leatherman.com) is a stainless-steel toolbox on your belt. The 7-ounce Sidekick has spring-action needle-nose and standard pliers, wire cutters and stripper, knife and serrated knife, saw, ruler, can and bottle openers, wood and metal file and three screwdrivers.

FOLDING OR FIXED KNIFE? KNOW THE POLICY

Knife policies vary among packs, troops, councils and camps when it comes to what blade types and lengths are allowed. Learn your unit’s policy before buying a blade of any kind. When it comes to types of knives, the Guide to Safe Scouting recommends “choosing the right equipment for the job at hand.”

BLADES

Most blades are made from strong and durable stainless steel. Blades are available in straight edge, serrated (jagged like a saw) or both. Bigger is not always better. A small, sharp four-inch-or-smaller blade can cut just as well as bigger knives but is much safer to handle and easier to maneuver in tight spots.

Stansport's Folding Knife, Fork, Spoon Multitool

Stansport’s Folding Knife, Fork, Spoon Multitool ($15, stansport.com) has more than eating utensils. The tool, which separates into wo so you can use fork and spoon together, also has a can opener, corkscrew and chisel all in a belt-ready nylon carrying pouch.

PRICE AND QUALITY

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a quality tool. Often, an inexpensive knife will do everything you want it to do. As prices go up, you’ll see small improvements in the quality and size of the blade.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Knives and multitools can last your whole life if you care for them. Wipe your pocketknife with a damp cloth to clean it, and add a drop of food-safe oil at pivot points to keep it at its best. Use a sharpener to keep your blade sharp.

“A sharp knife will work for you, while a dull one works against you,” says Kyle Owens of Work Sharp, a company that makes sharpeners.

Work Sharp's Pocket Knife Sharpener

A great knife deserves an equally great sharpener. Work Sharp’s Pocket Knife Sharpener ($15, worksharptools.com) is small enough to stash in your pack, with a diamond sharpening plate and ceramic honing rod that have built-in angle guides so you can get a perfect edge on your pocketknife.

CARRY IT SAFELY

The smartest, safest place to stash your knife is in an easy-access spot in your backpack. You’re asking for trouble by wearing a fixed-blade knife on your belt. If you fall, the knife could rotate inward and you could land right on the blade.

Gerber's Armbar Trade

At only 3.1 ounces, Gerber’s Armbar Trade ($50, gerbergear.com) has eight essential tools, including a knife, saw, awl, driver, pry bar, hammer and bottle opener, packed into a surprisingly small and effective pocket clip tool.

TREAT YOUR KNIFE WITH RESPECT

Treating pocket knives with respect not only ensures your safety, but also keeps others safe. Here are a few major no-no’s:

  • Throwing a knife
  • Using a dull or dirty blade
  • Handing a knife to someone blade first
  • Cutting while others are within your “safety circle” (arm’s length)
  • Carving into something that doesn’t belong to you
  • Cutting toward your body

Using a knife requires responsibility. Bear Scouts can start carrying a pocketknife after completing the Whittling Chip requirements. Members of Scouts BSA must earn their Totin’ Chip, which also gives them the right to carry and use axes and saws.

  16. WD-40 is not an oil, it is a degreaser. It will work very well to clean the hinges of your knife. However, it dries really quickly. A better alternitive would be to use a light weight oil, like what you would use on a bike chain.

  17. I like a Swiss army knife for everyday use, the Handyman is perfect for me. For camp stuff I have the Mora 511, inexpensive and outstanding quality.

I carry a Leatherman Freestyle. It has one blade with a liner lock and a pair of pliers with a wire cutter. I find that in the real world, I often need to hold something still or cut it loose. Compact tool kits are great and I keep one on my bicycle where I might need it, but my Freestyle is the tool I keep with me.

  33. Funny, Scouts for decades carried a slip joint knife—-that is, one without a locking blade—-with no problems. It all comes down to keeping in mind how to use the knife safely. I guess a lock would be better for some but don’t forget—any lock on a blade can fail, don’t depend too heavily on them.

A knife that i would recommend is he CRKT M16-01KZ. it is an inexpensive but durable knife from a great company

      • go to cabellas and get a buck 110 folder or if that is to bulky get a standard swiss army champ knife at Walmart whitch would roughly be around 30$ and on the one ten folder it would be 40 dollars roughly.

  35. The Gerber gator is the best knife ever I just kneed to sharpen it

  36. For general eveday carry to meetings and outings, we recommend our youth be able to core an apple with their knife. When did BSA approve a fixed blade sheath knife for carry? I have seen these promoted in BL and Council Camps.

  37. Spyderco Manix 2, best knife I have ever owned, had it for 3 year and still going strong.

  38. they should have more leathermans they are such good tools to have

  39. the leatherman freestyle is a wonderful tool, with just a locking blade and pliers it isn’t bulky but is very handy!

The leatherman is far and away superior to any folding knife. The folding knife is pretty much obsolete unless you cannot carry a multitool.

Carried one every day and used it every day in Afghanistan. Folding knife was in my pocket as a backup but never really used it.

  40. Actually I have a Ka-bar and it is not awkward to carry, in fact it can double as an ax and is a great tool.

  51. sog knife is awesome

  52. I have the Morakniv knife. I would highly recommend it to an older scout only because it is a decently large blade and is very sharp. The one down side would be the “scout safe” tip only because when you are trying to pierce something with your knife it becomes very difficult.

Regarding Water Displacement- Formula 40 (WD-40): Now before anyone jumps all over me saying “Its Toxic, its toxic!” let me just say that consumption of WD-40 in small amounts, (such as a thin coating on a knife blade) while not recommended, will NOT make you ill. WD-40, while not as long lasing at 3 in 1 or Smiths Multi-purpose knife oil, will work fine as far as lubrication, and will be twice as good as the mentioned brands when it comes to rust removal. So go ahead and use it on your knives and tools. Concerning the ingredients of WD, the truth is WD-40s main ingredient is not fish oil either. If it was, it would stink really bad and would expire. As I stated before, NOBODY but the makers of WD-40 know what the ingredients are. Go to the WD-40 website and look at the WD-40 facts. All I have said is repeated there. Thank you.

If you want a good knife that is relatively cheap, then buy the Smith and Wesson First Response, it is very durable, have had mine for 8 years, never sharpened it and it can cut through paper like butter.

  55. If you have had a spring assist-open knife, you know as well as I do that if you store it closed, the spring doesn’t open the blade as well as when it was purchased. I have found the solution to this problem is simply to store it with the blade open. (this should only be done in a safe place where the knife(or knives) have no chance of falling onto something(or someone).

  56. Scouting Dad // November 23, 2014 at 3:29 pm // Reply

Maybe I’m out of touch, but the cost of the Case knife with the fork and spoon shouldn’t be more than $25. 00. With all that a scout needs with a uniform, handbook, and other items, the knife needs to be affordable to be able to use and not just put on a shelf because it’s too expensive to use if it breaks. Just like the 22 rifles; priced for collectors, not for scouts.

  57. too bad you didn’t feature the original multi-tool that was designed by a Scout… the legendary Leatherman. I proudly own several. Best knife and tool made.

  58. Oh one more thing even though I already have one pocket knife and a multi tool it would be nice to get a new cool pocket knife and a multitool with more tools but I don’t need it i want it but it would be nice to get that stuff

  59. my family is saving up to go to Disney-world and I won’t get a whole lot of presents but that’s fine I really don’t mind and to be honest we aren’t the wealthiest family (at all) so I thought me and my sister could share the stuff she likes and I like so it’s a win win win win for me my dad my mom and my sister

  60. gear for me to get the best of all of my favorite song on my way to the game and the rest is a good idea but I think it’s a great way to the gym with the same thing over and over again in a statement issued after I finish my work and the rest of the day before I get a follow back on my way home and sleep all night and the rest of my favorite part of the day before I get a follow back on my phone and the rest of my favorite part of the year and the rest of my life and the rest of my favorite part of a sudden it was the best of the best way to the best thing to say it was the best thing to say it is not.

Yes it’s ok to carry a sheath knife
(Some people will however try to tell you otherwise )

For an excellent sheath knife I would recommend any mora knife
They make great knives that are very affordable around $10-$30

  66. Owned a leatherman sidekick for almost a year, best knife I ever had. the only reason I don’t own it todsy is it fell into a latrine on a campout

  67. I hear all the talk about leathermen… I prefer the gerber multitools instead. they are easier to open and close one handed and with the locking handle, you don’t have to worry about the knife closing on your hand

  68. The 20$ Smith & Wesson Oasis knife is a pretty good knife.

  69. Odd…no official BSA knives? Still have my Camillus BSA knife that I got in 87…great knife at a good price….

  70. I carry an Ontario RAT 1 in my pocket and I’ve got a Leatherman Wave on my hip in a belt sheath.

    • I love the Ontario Rat 1. It is pretty fast, and has AUS-8 steel. This steel is a budget steel, but a regular steel, like S30v steel can run you over 100 bucks. AUS8 steel has an okay rust resistance, has pretty good edge retention and is a softer steel, resulting in easy sharpening. I am also thinking about getting a Leatherman Wingman. I would also recommend the spyderco tenacious, but I feel that 8Cr13Mov steel is just a little bit lower grade than AUS-8. The spyderco tenacious is around 35 bucks and the Ontario Rat 1 has a 3.5 inch blade, weighs around 5 ounces and is around 27 dollars on amazon

  71. Personally, I’ve had better luck getting knives at either Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas.

I have a Kershaw Ken Onion pocket knife and a Gerber Scout multi-tool. Thats all i ever need. They’re both about $50, and they have a lifetime warranty. And FYI, WD-40 is NOT oil, it is a lubricant that removes oil. The best lubricant that I have found is 3-in-1 oil. If your tired of searching for the perfect pocket knife, just go ahead and get you a Kershaw.

gerber and bg knives are THE best

  82. you should try to get a knife made in the usa as they are usually better quality
my choices are anything from the scout store, spyderco, and kershaw

  83. NEVER USE WD-40 ON A KNIFE BLADE!!! WD-40 is not an oil, it is light kerosene- which disperses water and is slightly corrosive, thereby stripping any protective layers of oil OFF the blade. Use a light machine oil for lawnmowers or blades instead!

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // December 31, 2013 at 12:28 pm // Reply

I’ve been using WD-40 on my knives for years. They all work fine. The fact that Wd-40 is slightly corrosive is a good thing because that is what helps it remove rust and gunk from knife blades. It’s not corrosive enough to do any damage to your knife.

    • Knife Xpert 157(aka Chad 101) // February 12, 2014 at 11:32 am // Reply

Actually no one but the people who make WD-40 know what the ingredients are. It’s a closely guarded company secret. So you are incorrect about the kerosene.

      • Sargesbrat // October 7, 2014 at 4:21 am //

WD-40’s main ingredient is fish oil. WD stands for Water Displacement. Designed to spray moisture out of military radios in Vietnam. Great for loosening up old, rusted knives. It will lube ok. Feel more comfortable with real oil such as 3-in-1. Just sayin’

      • Knife Xpert 157(aka Chad 101) // January 12, 2015 at 1:26 pm //

Wrong. The fish oil thing is a myth. go to the WD40 web and look at their “WD-40 myths”

    • Copied this from the WD-40 site in regards to weather the product is toxic or not:
“If swallowed, call physician or poison control center immediately” Any questions now?

      • Knife Xpert 157(aka Chad 101) // September 23, 2014 at 12:06 pm //

That Irrelevant. Nobody said anything about toxicity. But since you bring it up. WD-40 is not toxic enough to kill you if you swallow a few drops. I know because I have when cutting an apple with my freshly oiled knife. I experienced no ill effects. As long as you dont go around drinking it you’ll be fine.

Would recommend if you’re looking for a multitool.

    • Soak it in “Coke” for a few days; rub it down well with a plastic scrubber and then wash it thoroughly in warm soapy water. Dry it off and rub it down with knife oil (only) and wipe it down again. Might not get all of the rust but should remove most of it. May repeat it again for even better results.

Buck is a renowned company that his been in business a lot longer then Ka-bar. if I was to take a ka-bar and a buck and compare how well they did skinning a deer, the Buck would be sharper, and could do the job quicker then any ka-bar. • Boy scout 453 // December 17, 2012 at 7:40 pm //

A ka-bar is a killing knife designed for the military it is a knife ment for stabbing ever noticed the uncomenly sharp point on it plus it’s a fixed blade knife so if you triped and fell on it you would probably die. The point is it is a dangerous knife to carry and I don’t suggest it ninga.

    Hey Scouts:
WD-40 is not an oil, it’s purpose is to loosen rusty bolts and similar items (Please read the label). 3 in 1 oil will work for knives but can be toxic to some people. Always use a knife oil as it offers superior lubrication and protection and is not dangerous if minimumly consumed. Also, never use food oils, they will gum up the pivot and can spoil like any food source item; again causing illness.

w/ additional surrated blade, sissor and saw for $28.00 on e-bay. I then bought a second in a store for $36.00 for my son. The avarage swiss army lock blade cost around $44.00.

      • Kilcannon // March 31, 2012 at 12:57 pm //

My SAK trekker has a one handed open lock blade, and only set me back 31 dollars. It comes with a free classic on Amazon, and is a quality tool.

      • Delta Force // April 3, 2012 at 11:10 pm //

Ok ok! I was wrong! BUT… your average every day Swiss knife does not lock. e.g. Spartan, Tinker etc… I even carried one in my kit bag while a para-trooper! But I cut myself more with that knife then with any other knife.

  189. Smith and Wesson extreme ops CK105H knife is really great, and less then $15.

  190. i want to buy one off those but my mom said i cant by one and i read the hole thing and
    i relly want it

Carry an ax, knives are for wimps. You can open anything with an ax. If sharpened correctly you can whittle with it too.

  192. Get a Kershaw!!!

  193. Victorinox knives are the best I’ve ever used Gerber makes good ones too, but a $20
    Victorinox will last you years.

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // February 17, 2012 at 2:26 pm // Reply

No I would not take these swiss knives most do not lock and that is a big hazard! I looked it up and the ones that do lock cost a ton! Gerber is a good company though

  194. how do i remove rust from a knife?

  195. anybody who wants a good knife should check out the gerber assisted opening blade sold at most wal marts

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // January 28, 2012 at 6:50 pm // Reply

No, a Buck QuickFire would be a better choice. Gerber is a good company but their assisted knifes are made in china. While Buck’s are made in Post Falls, Idaho!

  196. I had an LMF 2 while in deployment and a Tactical Assault Paratrooper Knife (TAP-K) auto knife. but they only let me keep the LMF the TAP-K is illegal and ONLY available for the military which stinks because that was a good knife. oh well at least I now have a Buck quick fire assisted opening knife. Its not nearly as good or fast but is still a great USA made knife! take it from a Paratrooper… its a good knife!

  197. I got a Buck QuickFire assisted opening knife and it ROCKS!!

  198. @slyfox I’ve noticed the oldest scouts realize they can do with less when they can pack all they need in a small space and end up packing lighter

  199. I’ve noticed one thing more than anything about scouts with knives, the older the scout the smaller the knife. Every new scout wants the 20 function knife until it comes time to carry it on a backpack outing. That’s when the desire for a small one blade knife comes in handy. Weight and size become an important factor then. Personally, I use a single blade knife by PECK. Its titanium with a steel edge, weighs almost nothing, clips to a pocket if desired and only costs about $22.00 at Gander Mountain. I do own other knives; my other main knife is a Swiss Army altimeter that I use for elevation and temperature monitoring on outings. Its sissor is the most useful blade of the three offered. Again it comes down to preference.

not true with our scout troop! When I go camping/hiking I carry a Gerber LMF 2 fixed blade and a Gerber Bear Grylls parang machete for chopping limbs and to use as a hatchet.

      • Off trail monkey // January 18, 2012 at 10:43 pm //

Fixed blades and machettes are not allowed in scouting according to the guide to safe scouting. Your Scoutmaster should stop that right away.

      • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // January 22, 2012 at 8:03 pm //

Look kid, it clearly says in the boy scout hand book that they are “not recommended” to does not say the are illegal. Different troops have different rules about fixed blade and machetes. Let me tell you brother if you lived where I lived you would be glad to carry a fixed blade and a machete. Where I live the weather, mountains, cliffs and forests fight fiercely and you need a good solid fixed blade to fight back with. YOU try climbing a almost vertical cliff with buck brush everywhere with out a machete! Thank you for being concerned but us Idaho boys know what were doing.

      • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // January 23, 2012 at 10:32 am //

My scoutmaster has nothing to stop. non of the guys(or me) have ever cut them selves or misused their fixed blades of machetes . secondly, it says in MY scout book that they are “not recommend” it does not say they are “not allowed” I live deep in the Idaho Mountains and you need a good solid fixed blade to get the job done.

  200. If you want to buy a knife I could help u choose a good one please say how much u want to spend and what kind of a knife u want small med large fixed blade, classic lock back, trapper Swiss army, Multi tool, etc

OK this is a test. Lets say I want a 4 to 4 and 1/2 inch fixed blade what would YOU recommend?

  201. i think carbon blades are better then stainless steel becuase they sharpen a hole lot better

    • Do thay stay sharp

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // December 23, 2011 at 1:45 pm // Reply

Carbon is good for sharpablity, but it stinks in edge retention! If you want a REAL GOOD steel that is as easy to sharpen as carbon but as hard as ceramic then CMP S30V steel is the steel for you! Buck Knifes makes them for Cabelas. they are called the Alaskan Guide Sires of knifes.

  202. my sister wants a pocketknife but i dont know what kind of knife to get her any suggestions?

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // December 8, 2011 at 10:47 pm // Reply

@ireadalot. Ok let me think. Hmmmmmmmmmm… Oh! a Buck 55 hunter would be perfect! Or a Gerber Bear Grylls mini-scout. The Buck 55 is $30 on Amazon.com And the Mini scout is $12 on Amazon.com. hope these suggestions help! By the way, I like your name!

    • There is two brands I buy; Swiss Army Wenger and Leatherman. Both Swiss Army company give you quality knife but I like the design of the tools and blade of the Wenger over the Victorinox. Beside US made, Leatherman are very solid and durable. I recently got the Skelatool for $30 at Fry’s Electronic. Another model that I have and like is the Blast. It’s a midsize tool with knife, saw, scissor, file, pliers and other tools.

To me quality and material is very important because they determine the life of the tool. Knife made in China just does not seem to hold up.

    • The victorinox tinker or recruit are good choices also a buck lockback is good

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // December 15, 2011 at 1:00 pm // Reply

      A Buck 55 or a Bear Grylls Gerber mini-scout or a Gerber Mini-Paraframe

    • I have 3 knives 2 of them are Gerber Gerber is my faverite brand

    • If you’re sister’s under 13, I recommend some sort of small multi-tool knife, possibly, if you can find it, Sheffield brand. If you’re sister’s like, over 13, maybe a larger knife, but not uncomfortably large. Also, ask her if she wants it fixed blade if she’s over 13. Those are my favorite kind. 😀

I say a claus double blade 5$ at OSH

  203. The gerber bear grylls are great knives they have serrated edges and rarely go dull. You can choose from a fiked 4.9″ blade or shorter folding blades the folding blades come w/ either a belt clip or military grade nylon sheath, both are the same size and are great knives. The only down side is they are a bit bulky.

    • Knife Xpert 157 (aka Chad 101) // December 8, 2011 at 12:12 am // Reply

I have the Ultimate knife, folding scout, parang, ultimate multi-tool and my brother has the mini-scout and the mini-multi tool. I think they could do a bit better job on the fixed blade. It still works but I lost the fire steel, the whistle and the sheath broke a little. I replaced it with a USA Gerber LMF II. Just take good care of your Ultimate knife and it will do fine(dont beat it up like I did!) great products! just wish they where made in the US. I totally agree with you me185!

      • I’ve got the Scout and its perfect for my uses but tenderfoots always complain about why you need to clean a knife after using it!

cabelas, sportsman’s warehouse, Bass pro, Amazon.com. I would get a Gerber LMF II or a Ka-bar Becker Champion. I would not recommend Ka-Bar fighting knifes Ka-bar is a super good company but their fighting knifes are meant for Marines not Boy scouts.

I suggest a Gerber LMF 2. $65 Amazon.com. Or a Ka-bar Becker BK2 $50 at Amazon.com is a nice light weight knife. I would not recommend a Ka-bar USA fighting knife. They are SUPER good knifes BUT they are meant for fighting more then utility. oh and irock the comment right below me, the Gerber suspension is $25 on Amazon.com. Really good and has a dependable locking system.

    • The compact scout is just a little small for me. No offense to the knife it self but it is just a little small. But it is a great back up knife if you ever lose your main knife. I have the Bear Grylls Gerber Scout and it works pretty good. The Bear Grylls folding sheath knife is heavy duty but folds down. Another great knife is the Buck Red Point 750 folding knife.

Im stuck i have one of each but dont know which one to take on a campout

    • A single-blade lockback is great they can do many things, they are small, light, and are easy to carry in your pocket.Swiss army knives are good if you spend a lot of times in the out doors, but are bulky when worn casually like in the city. It is up to you for what you want to buy so choose wisely.

      • A “swiss army” style knife is very handy for opening a can and tightening a screw, and the “spear point” blade is good for poking plastic wrappers(mind that the blade doesn’t close and cut you) however it is not as easy to clean, harder to open, and the blade is thinner(good and bad) a “single blade lock back” knife is a simple and dependable knife that is easy to open(not so much to close, but is sturdier and safer) it has a thicker blade(durable) and

      • Not completely true. My swiss army has everything except the pliers of the BG Ultimate, and the blade DOES lock open.

@ Some, body. swiss army tools that lock are VERY expensive(up to $240)! Plus most typical swiss army knifes do not lock. The BG also has an advanced locking system that most other multi-tools don’t have. THANK YOU for commenting though!! SO many people will make a comment and for so reason never come back to BL! Some people might say Case knives.. but theyre losing quality. and theyre expensive.. I would say get a victorinox swiss army knife. The swiss army farmer pocketknife is a good knife but it isnt considered a boy scout knife, but it will last a lifetime. I carry a Great eastern cutlery stockman pocketknife (a lot of birthday money)

    • Ok it may be exspensive but get a swis champ model. it has 33 attachments including a ballpoint pen and a small spatula. lokin for smaler? cant help ya there 🙁

    • you could buy a imperial kamp king they are nice (i have one) and they are cheap on e bay the official boy scout knife is based on it or you can buy old fashioned scout knives at almost any scout shop

  306. i have 10

  307. Switchblades are completly legal and BSA doesn’t like them because they don’t trust younger scouts to not be instinctive and start fighting with them. So to those of u such as hippiescout115 and replyer befor u start spouting off, u should do ur research. In the case of sheath knives, they are completely safe if kept in their sheath when not being used

  308. i want a swichblade

    • if you want a fast draw knife get the kershaw volt you press the flipper and opens really fast and the steel is really hard its Rockwell hardness is 58-60 its reliable and practically a switchblade buts perfectly legal blade stay sharp for a long time and its shavein sharp

    • The 100% rustproof (scientifically proven) knife is made with H-1 Japanese steel. Spyderco is the only manufacturer that I can find that makes knives with H-1. They are pricy about 100 bucks, so if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative that would be great.

      firefly

    • ya its a spyderco i think they are high quality but actualy a pretty long blade ( my dad has one for work) the main thing is they are all serrated good for some things but bad for whittling

  312. The Esee Izula is a great knife, I use it for everything. It is a fixed blade knife, so it is much sturdier that the average pocket knife. The knife is meant to be worn around the neck (with sheath) for fast access. It is great for jobs more commonly associated with scouting, such as cutting rope, being used with fire starting tools, etc., and also is good for hunting and fishing.

I am with you HippieScout151 spring assisted knifes are dangerous & the spring’s could break or the spring is too powerful & if your whittling it could break the wood & cut Your fingers & retract back in & not come out, or the spring’s is not strong enough & opens up while it is in your pocket & could cut you.

      • i disagree the kershaw volt is very reliable and does not open in your pocket it is quick draw and is easy to open it holds a edge for a long time and is perfectly legal it has a nice design and is an overall nice knife

      • in the kershaw volt the spring pushes against the part of the blade that pivots so it actually keeps it closed until its opens to about 20 degrees it is a very nice knife 27$ i reccoend it

  318. cutco knives are the best they never rust and they are used in the millitary. also known as ka-bar

  319. I use a Cutco Pocket Knife, not only does it not rust, but it’s way cheaper than the suggested knife in the July issue, (Spyderco Salt 1) the best part is it’s made here in the United States, and guarenteed forever. I typically call my local cutco office and they send it back and have it sharpened every year, although I must admit it doesn’t ever need sharpened.

    • Hey Sweet,

Where I lived previously, in *censored*, the blade length limit was 4 inches. I moved to *censored* and bought a knife that was 3.5in. but it turns out the limit here was 3 inches. Just a warning- check with your troop before buying a knife. By the way this is the knife I use (not in scouting, exceeds limit) Ozark Trail lockback knife. I bought it at Wal-Mart for $15

  337. I use a 1957 black wenger scout that is the best knife i’ve ever used (except fixed blade, but those aren’t allowed in scouting.)

    • OADude,

Fixed blade knives are allowed in Scouts however a blade above 4 inches in not a wise choice. Heck I wish I bought a regular scout knife instead of the LMF II. Sure it’s a good knife but it’s a hassle to carry around.

  338. I use a Buck 750 Red-Point, it is one of the toughest knives I’ve ever used. I would usually use a fixed-blade knife instead (I hunt& fish a lot), but you know, scouting doesn’t allow fixed-blades. But anyway, the 750 Red-Point, one of the best scouting knives ever. I’ve had it for a good 2 years, and have never had to sharpen it. And its lock is very safe for scouting stuff.

  411. kershaw knives work pretty well for normal camp use. the victornox camper is a very good multi-tool. I found the Buck Diamondback knife for 16 bucks plus 8 bucks shipping with insurance

  412. COOL

i have a gerber bolt action knife my dad gave to me, it’s 25+ years old and he only had to sharpen it once. it holds an edge well and is very durable i reccomend GERBER legendary blades as a knife choince

  414. if you do whitling alot get a knife with a lock. a regular one could slip a chop off your finger.

  415. unforunately, the gear guy doesnt mention that most troops forbid fixed blades. not all, but most.

  416. I love my leatherman charge al.

  417. i already have a Victorianox multi-tool, but this is the great for anyone who does not have knife yet

I just got a Buck Multi-tool,and it is great. The blade is 3 inches and razor sharp. It is really comfortable to hold and I guess that it will serve me well.I payed 30 dollars for it and has a rugged sheath.Blade open it is 7inches long and 4inches closed, overall. I think that it,the unit was a good investment. What I really like about it is that it feels comfortable to wear it on the waist. The Buck Multi-tool is comprised of Screwdriver,Pliers,Sissors, and a 3inch razor sharp blade. It weighs about half a pound.Maybe,a little less,I do not know for sure. This is a good buy for sure, and I would recamend it for sure.

  419. ruko is the way to go i have used them at every camp i go to they have durible blades and long lasting sharpness.

You are able to open most (if not all) GERBER multi-tools to the pliers function with one hand. This Is a very useful feature when one hand is holding something else. I have not seen this is any other multi tool. My GERBER is 10+ years old and with me every day. I have needed replacement sheathes and a latch mechanism replaced which GERBER shipped to me with out cost. I was able to replace latch myself but they offered to do so with out cost for me. I would recomend this multi tool to anyone.
As for pocket knives there is only one choice for a durable unit, a VICTIORINOX swiss army knife. Also owned and carried daily by me for too many years to count.

  423. Get a USMC Ka-Bar short. Best knife in the world!

    • haha Ka-bar’s are amazing, they are made by Cutco which also makes a nice Pocket knife, (Cutco’s guarentee is the best in the world as well.)

  424. I perfer the GERBER brand the most.

  425. If you want an awesome knife get a SOG!

  426. I am an eagle scout, and I have a Gerber Auto-plier that has been on literally every campout I have been on since I got it 6 years ago. (except philmont.) It has everything I need, except possibly a saw, and is very sturdy, but heavy. and it is very entertaining to watch people try to put away the spring loaded pliers.

  427. hey guy named me, leatherman has a 25 year warranty! not 50!

  428. If I had to recommend a multitool brand, go with the Leatherman Wave. It has 3 fold out locking blades which is a got-to-have because sometimes when you wital the blade folds back and you could cut yourself.(I had to learn that the hard way)It comes with a 25 year warranty and my friend seems to love it.And if you think the Wave is to exspensive, think about getting the Blast.

  429. I got the best multitool for christmas. At $30 it is no exactly cheap but the Gerber suspension is awesome. It also has locking tools.

  430. For This 08 Christmas I Got 3 Set Of Winchester Knifes. In It There Was 2 Folding Knifes And One Knife that Has to be held in a sheath.I also got a Victorianox swiss army knife that came with a small classic swiss army knife. And the longest lasting knife I have ever used is a winchester knife. And If you going to buy a knife buy a winchester knife. From , babyking21

  431. i have a bsa knife cost 55 bucks and icut my self twice and got it taken away

I have a pocket knife that I got for $9 at walmart and it has sooooo many different tools on it. the only problem was that when i bought it, the knife was so dull it was literally rounded on the blade! but i sharpened it and it works great!

  435. swiss army knives are okay i juss found mine and its okay……….. but i still like my buck the best and my case knives

  436. okay i have somethin to say about tomahawk pocket knifes….. if you get one of those there a pretty good knife. but you do not neeed to flip it open very hard because if you do that it will break. i did that and mine broke into pieces. i really like gerber utilitiey knifes they are pretty good for utilities with the plires and the mini saw and the screw drivers and what not. i also like my buck knife a lot it works good on the farm and i like case knifes to carry around

  437. I like to use a swiss army. All the bells and stuff are good

  438. I like knifes!!!!!!!!

  439. and another note is that the Gerber was only like 10 bucks. IDK how much the Skeletool is because i got it as a gift but i think its $50 or 60

  440. I have a LEatherman Skeletool. Its a really good knife because it has the pliers, screw driver ETC, but it has a large enough locking balde on the outside. Most have nonlocking plades that you need to open and close the pliers to get at it. I used to have a swiss but sombody stole it. I also have a gerber lock back with a serrated blade that is pretty good.

i had a swiss army knife but i lost it 🙁

  442. I have a Victorianox knife, an old BSA knife, and an SOG knife. SOG is good if you want a pocket knife that lasts for a while and is bigger.

  443. Benchmade knives are great. They get a little pricey, but htey do have models of $30 or less. I have a Benchmade Benchmite II knife which costs around $35.

  444. When buying a knife, choose a Swiss Army knife with the scissor tool. It can come in a lot of handy. First of all, you can use it to clip hangnails you might get when collecting wood. Also, you can use it to cut fishing line on fishing trips and twine while camping so you do not dull the actual blade. On the topic of dulling blade, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT whittle with this knife because it will dull the blade so fast you won’t know it hit you, especially if the knife is some cheap genaric brand. Thanks for listening.

I have two knives that I use a lot. One is an Old-style scout knife and one is a good quality swiss army knife that I bought at a day camp.

  446. I think a good survival knife should be between 4 inches and 7 inches

This article is obviously somewhat outdated-especially the part where it says that multitool blades don’t lock. Maybe the wimpy Swiss Army knife blades don’t, but all the multitools I’ve ever bought have lockback blades, pliers, and screwdrivers.

  448. I have one Leatherman multi, two Gerber multis, and an El Cheapo lockblade that I picked up in Columbia. I broke the Leatherman, but you can’t beat that 25 year warranty. El Cheapo is actually my favorite, but I use multitools more often, so I carry my Gerber. The Gerber is pobably the sharpeest knife in the house- still.

  449. buck knives are they way to go

I have a small bush craft knife that has always worked well I recomend one

  458. I have a one-blade $4.99 knife that I bought in the sawgrass holiday park, and it has been very sharp throughout the two years that I have had it . I do not reccomend buying cheap knives in souvenier shops, but sometimes there are some good quality knives in unlikely places. Always try to find something that you do not have to save up for years for, but still is a brand name quality knife. I never like to spend more than $30 on knives. Also, valor is a great knife company that I reccomend.

  459. Cool! Thanks for the advice, Mr. Kummerfeldt! I have a 3-blade knife. I don’t know what brand it is, as it doesn’t have a logo on it. It has a cool safety feature on it: all the blades lock in place when they’re open, so they won’t shut on my hand. It also has a compass, which is kind of annoying because the needle always points toward the blades. It’s cool, though.

  460. I have a genaric gerber and it works like a charm but can be a little lose so i have to tighen up the blades so dont get generic knifes they break like crazy. Buy name brand.

  461. I have a little blue knife with one blade that works well but I should try a stronger one.

  462. i have a Columbia River lock back single bladed knife, it rocks. i personally dislike multi tools, i prefer lock backs. if you want a good quality knife for under 25 bucks, then get this one at Walmart. anywhere else it costs like 55 bucks, if you do get this knife, be sure to oil it every once in a while.

  463. that was good edvise!by the way,my dad has a mulitool.your edvise rocks!!!

If you want a good knife that stays sharp even after a few years within purchase, get a leatherman. They all have great tools and locking systems. A few boy scouts that I know have a leatherman, usually a blast or fuse. I didn’t stop there; I bought the leatherman wave, with a straight knife, serrated knife, needlenose pliers, regular pliers, shear cutters, wire cutters, five screwdrivers, a lanyard ring. scissors, wire stripper, can opener, ruler (inches and centimeters), wood saw, metal saw, diamond coated file, wood/metal file, and a leather sheath.

  528. what knife for 15 bucks?

it would be kool to see some knife reviews.

  529. A lock blade can be good when using your knife point (such as when whittling holes in things), however, for simple woodcarving and ninety percent of the other uses of a pocket knife a standard folding blade is generally fine, especially if you practice standard knife safety when using it. I’ve carried a knife for over 20 years and while I have cut myself on occasion, can’t remember a single time it’s been because the blade folded on me. (Though I do have a friend who buried his blade in his thigh because he was playing with the locking feature).

As for the huge multi-tools, ensure that the handle isn’t too big to be unwieldly. The fatter the ‘pocket’ knife, the easier it can be for it to slip out of your hand while using it, meaning the more ‘uses’ advertised, the less useful it can sometimes become.

  530. If you get a pocket or folding knife it should have a lock-blade feature. You can get a bad cut from it folding up on you if you don’t. I prefure one bladed lock blades or fixed blades.
