How to Buy a Good Pocketknife or Multitool
With proper training, many Scouts can use a knife — a valuable tool for camping or working on a whittling project. A multitool provides multiple blades and other tools. Examples are saws, drivers and even forks and spoons.
A knife is not a toy. If youâre a Bear, Webelos or Arrow of Light Cub Scout, earn your Whittling Chip. If youâre in Scouts BSA, earn your Totinâ Chip. Then you will know how to safely carry and use one of these tools.
KNIFE BASICS
There are several types of knives.
All-purpose folding pocketknives are common in Scouting. Most come with tools such as a can opener, screwdriver, tweezers and, of course, knife blades — all in one compact package. Though they can be extremely handy, a downside is the knife blade doesn’t lock into place, so it may fold up on your hand while you’re using it.
Lockbacks are simple folding knives with a single blade that can be locked. So you get the benefits of a sturdy fixed blade-style knife but in a convenient pocket-size package that can be folded open with just one hand.
Fixed blades, are no-nonsense knives with a beefy handle and stationary blade. If you need a knife to accomplish the everyday tasks you come across in the outdoors, from whittling on things and cutting materials to spreading peanut butter on your sandwiches, a short, no more than four-inch-long, fixed-blade knife will accomplish all of that. Avoid large sheath knives; they are heavy and awkward to carry.
You’ll also find specialty knives such as river rescue knives with serrated blades for slicing rope, whittling knives designed for carving wood, and multitools, which are compact, handheld tool boxes. Most are built around a pair of folding pliers.
FOLDING OR FIXED KNIFE? KNOW THE POLICY
Knife policies vary among packs, troops, councils and camps when it comes to what blade types and lengths are allowed. Learn your unitâs policy before buying a blade of any kind. When it comes to types of knives, the Guide to Safe Scouting recommends “choosing the right equipment for the job at hand.”
BLADES
Most blades are made from strong and durable stainless steel. Blades are available in straight edge, serrated (jagged like a saw) or both. Bigger is not always better. A small, sharp four-inch-or-smaller blade can cut just as well as bigger knives but is much safer to handle and easier to maneuver in tight spots.
PRICE AND QUALITY
You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a quality tool. Often, an inexpensive knife will do everything you want it to do. As prices go up, you’ll see small improvements in the quality and size of the blade.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Knives and multitools can last your whole life if you care for them. Wipe your pocketknife with a damp cloth to clean it, and add a drop of food-safe oil at pivot points to keep it at its best. Use a sharpener to keep your blade sharp.
âA sharp knife will work for you, while a dull one works against you,â says Kyle Owens of Work Sharp, a company that makes sharpeners.
CARRY IT SAFELY
The smartest, safest place to stash your knife is in an easy-access spot in your backpack. You’re asking for trouble by wearing a fixed-blade knife on your belt. If you fall, the knife could rotate inward and you could land right on the blade.
TREAT YOUR KNIFE WITH RESPECT
Treating pocket knives with respect not only ensures your safety, but also keeps others safe. Here are a few major no-noâs:
- Throwing a knife
- Using a dull or dirty blade
- Handing a knife to someone blade first
- Cutting while others are within your âsafety circleâ (armâs length)
- Carving into something that doesnât belong to you
- Cutting toward your body
Using a knife requires responsibility. Bear Scouts can start carrying a pocketknife after completing the Whittling Chip requirements. Members of Scouts BSA must earn their Totinâ Chip, which also gives them the right to carry and use axes and saws.
The flexcut “Carvin Jack” collection, an entire proffesional wood carvers repituare including gouges and sometimes even hook knifes. $100s out of my price range though: ( gonna stick with my swiss army knife quite a few more years! considering an opinel though.
I kept the magazine until I got my totin chip and I followed the steps and got myself a great knife: a custom buck
I got a nice ozark trail one from walmart. Its way better than you would ever think. For my standereds atleast. We dont normaly do much high adventure in my small sd troop.
I have a leatherman rebar, and it has been very useful and durable
I use an old boy scout pocket knife. As well as a swiss army tinker. I advise against any knife made in China.
I have the Leatherman Free T4. Would recommend it. Extremely durable expert multitool.đ
I have the Gerber Wolf. Only $50 for a spring assisted knife with a lockable 4 inch blade.
VERY VERY useful lesson on pocket Knifes
Swiss Army Knife …. the best never gets dulll
high quality and practical
Sounds like a good lesson for pocket knifes đȘđȘđȘđȘđȘ
The knife i would reccomend is the Victoriax Swiss Army Spartan. has all of your basic stuff and is 20 bucks.
I have multiple knives but two favorites I got a Swiss Army knife withe one blade saw and can opener (getting a better one soon) and one of the most useful which helps proves the point you donât need to spend a fortune on a multi tool is a cabelas brand multi tool with pryers wire cutter sicors both types of screw drivers can and bottle opener blade and saw that I found in a drop box for 6.37
I have the victorinox fieldmaster. It’s about the same as the huntsman but has a phillips screwdriver instead of a bottle opener.
I great knife brand is Bench Made. I have many of their knives and they work great.
I have the Gerber mp-600, and the , and it works awesome for opening a can to fixing a drawer.
I do reccomend something like a swiss army and/or maybe a 3-inch knife for a scout that is starting out
I do reccomend something like a swiss army and/or maybe a 3-inch knife for a scout that is starting out
WD-40 is not an oil, it is a degreaser. It will work very well to clean the hinges of your knife. However, it dries really quickly. A better alternitive would be to use a light weight oil, like what you would use on a bike chain.
I like a Swiss army knife for everyday use, the Handyman is perfect for me. For camp stuff I have the Mora 511, inexpensive and outstanding quality.
WD-40 is not a degreaser, it’s for Water Displacement in distributor caps.
I have the Victiorinox Huntsman which has 13 tools it works really for leather work or fixing a backpack or tent pole
Sog tactical knives are actually really good if you are looking for a folding knife go with the salute. Fixed go with the seal pup.
That is cool I have to look into that
DearXxleathermenwavex,
As it turns out yes you can as long as the blade is under 3inches
i want a wenger giant nife
I’m a fan of the Gerber Paraframe (two sizes, each with a clip). It has a partially serrated blade. I also found a decent three blade Imperial Schrade knife on Amazon for less than $20.
WalMart: Victorinox Super Tinker Knife with Leather Clip Pouch ($27)
lol
wow! the Wenger giant knife is HUGE! it must be hard to carry that around!
ya it sure is!!
Why are one set of knives shown here described as “…unnoticeably carried in any pocket.” Is that relevant for cub scouts?
when do we need the pocket knives
I thought the boys were only aloud to carry locking folding knifes in scouts. Is this wrong?
Only allowedto carry a folding knife in Cub Scouts, with their wittlin chip which comes as Bears.
Boy Scouts can carry fixed blade knives.
Check the guide to Safe Scouting to check this or any other safety related questions.
Leatherman wave is my favorite.
Mine too!
Dear gear guy,
I am looking for a new multitool what are your tips about the brands of multitool
A very sturdy folding knife is the Cold Steel Spartan and With a 4.5″ locking Blade it can handle just about job big or small.
the multitool bracelet also comes in black and you can also add a watch face
I carry a Leatherman Freestyle. It has one blade with a liner lock and a pair of pliers with a wire cutter. I find that in the real world, I often need to hold something still or cut it loose. Compact tool kits are great and I keep one on my bicycle where I might need it, but my Freestyle is the tool I keep with me.
Funny, Scouts for decades carried a slip joint knife—-that is, one without a locking blade—-with no problems. It all comes down to keeping in mind how to use the knife safely. I guess a lock would be better for some but don’t forget—any lock on a blade can fail, don’t depend too heavily on them.
yes, but they also would carry a fixed blade and/or a hatchet along with that
Hey, I’m looking for a new knife. My old one is worn down, and isn’t of much use anymore. Anybody know any good places to look? Thanks in advance!
A knife that i would recommend is he CRKT M16-01KZ. it is an inexpensive but durable knife from a great company
go to cabellas and get a buck 110 folder or if that is to bulky get a standard swiss army champ knife at Walmart whitch would roughly be around 30$ and on the one ten folder it would be 40 dollars roughly.
The Gerber gator is the best knife ever I just kneed to sharpen it
For general eveday carry to meetings and outings, we recommend our youth be able to core an apple with their knife. When did BSA approve a fixed blade sheath knife for carry? I have seen these promoted in BL and Council Camps.
Spyderco Manix 2, best knife I have ever owned, had it for 3 year and still going strong.
Scouts have sold fixed blade knives for years, but most troops and some camps forbid or discourage their use.
they should have more leathermans they are such good tools to have
the leatherman freestyle is a wonderful tool, with just a locking blade and pliers it isn’t bulky but is very handy!
The leatherman is far and away superior to any folding knife. The folding knife is pretty much obsolete unless you cannot carry a multitool.
Carried one every day and used it every day in Afghanistan. Folding knife was in my pocket as a backup but never really used it.
Actually I have a Ka-bar and it is not awkward to carry, in fact it can double as an ax and is a great tool.
the Leatherman Tread is the coolest multitool i have ever seen
Must be a Marine using a KABAR instead of tools better suited for the job.
Well, these are all great knives, except for the Morakniv. (No tip on a knife? Really?)But they don’t really compare to some of the classics. I’m not seeing any Case knives or Bucks, which are the classics. I carry my good o’l custom Buck 110 and a custom Swiss. (Hey, i like costom outdoors gear.)
I carry a Gerber Swagger and has been all I e.ver needed at a good price. Go Troop 35
I have a regular swiss army knife.
I use a Army Sheffieldđ
this is my favorite:Victorinox Super Tinker Swiss Army Knife
I carry around a machete on my belt because it’s good for both cutting and chopping.
I just bought a 8 incher off of eBay. I wear it on my belt as well/
I like the giant one:)
I use the Buck 110, a classic, and the Victorinox (Swiss Army) Huntsman. They are all you will ever need.
Does anyone have the Victorinox Huntsman knife? Would you recommend it?
I do! the Huntsman is a great choice for a boy scout, absoloutly recommend it! I used it today actually. hope this helps. đ
sog knife is awesome
I have the Morakniv knife. I would highly recommend it to an older scout only because it is a decently large blade and is very sharp. The one down side would be the “scout safe” tip only because when you are trying to pierce something with your knife it becomes very difficult.
Regarding Water Displacement- Formula 40 (WD-40): Now before anyone jumps all over me saying “Its Toxic, its toxic!” let me just say that consumption of WD-40 in small amounts, (such as a thin coating on a knife blade) while not recommended, will NOT make you ill. WD-40, while not as long lasing at 3 in 1 or Smiths Multi-purpose knife oil, will work fine as far as lubrication, and will be twice as good as the mentioned brands when it comes to rust removal. So go ahead and use it on your knives and tools. Concerning the ingredients of WD, the truth is WD-40s main ingredient is not fish oil either. If it was, it would stink really bad and would expire. As I stated before, NOBODY but the makers of WD-40 know what the ingredients are. Go to the WD-40 website and look at the WD-40 facts. All I have said is repeated there. Thank you.
K.X. 101
If you want a good knife that is relatively cheap, then buy the Smith and Wesson First Response, it is very durable, have had mine for 8 years, never sharpened it and it can cut through paper like butter.
If you have had a spring assist-open knife, you know as well as I do that if you store it closed, the spring doesn’t open the blade as well as when it was purchased. I have found the solution to this problem is simply to store it with the blade open. (this should only be done in a safe place where the knife(or knives) have no chance of falling onto something(or someone).
Maybe I’m out of touch, but the cost of the Case knife with the fork and spoon shouldn’t be more than $25. 00. With all that a scout needs with a uniform, handbook, and other items, the knife needs to be affordable to be able to use and not just put on a shelf because it’s too expensive to use if it breaks. Just like the 22 rifles; priced for collectors, not for scouts.
too bad you didn’t feature the original multi-tool that was designed by a Scout… the legendary Leatherman. I proudly own several. Best knife and tool made.
Oh one more thing even though I already have one pocket knife and a multi tool it would be nice to get a new cool pocket knife and a multitool with more tools but I don’t need it i want it but it would be nice to get that stuff
my family is saving up to go to Disney-world and I won’t get a whole lot of presents but that’s fine I really don’t mind and to be honest we aren’t the wealthiest family (at all) so I thought me and my sister could share the stuff she likes and I like so it’s a win win win win for me my dad my mom and my sister
gear for me to get the best of all of my favorite song on my way to the game and the rest is a good idea but I think it’s a great way to the gym with the same thing over and over again in a statement issued after I finish my work and the rest of the day before I get a follow back on my way home and sleep all night and the rest of my favorite part of the day before I get a follow back on my phone and the rest of my favorite part of the year and the rest of my life and the rest of my favorite part of a sudden it was the best of the best way to the best thing to say it was the best thing to say it is not.
What??
I think I need a new multitool any ideas
Leatherman wave đ
Leatherman MUT
if u want a new multitool get a leatherman they work great and u can get one for $40
At cabelas you can find them cheep at the checkout
Just remember, even though larger pocket knifes may seem cool, they can be difficult to carry around. A smaller reliable knife is easier to carry around in your pocket
Too bad BSA Supply Division, like Wal Mart can’t sell any USA made items. Keeping the economy going. Smokey Mountain has USA made BSA knives.
The Case knife is likely made in the USA.
Are sheath knifes legal in scouts
Yes. Fixed blade knives are completely legal and authorized by BSA. Check with your local troop to see if they are authorized at the local level.
Yes it’s ok to carry a sheath knife
(Some people will however try to tell you otherwise )
For an excellent sheath knife I would recommend any mora knife
They make great knives that are very affordable around $10-$30
Owned a leatherman sidekick for almost a year, best knife I ever had. the only reason I don’t own it todsy is it fell into a latrine on a campout
I hear all the talk about leathermen… I prefer the gerber multitools instead. they are easier to open and close one handed and with the locking handle, you don’t have to worry about the knife closing on your hand
leathermen have knife locks to
Leatherman are made in the USA whil gerber is made of cheap materials in china
The 20$ Smith & Wesson Oasis knife is a pretty good knife.
Odd…no official BSA knives? Still have my Camillus BSA knife that I got in 87…great knife at a good price….
No sheath knives in boy scouts
Sheathed knives are absolutely allowed in BSA.
The CASE built knife is a BSA licensed product.
I carry an Ontario RAT 1 in my pocket and I’ve got a Leatherman Wave on my hip in a belt sheath.
I love the Ontario Rat 1. It is pretty fast, and has AUS-8 steel. This steel is a budget steel, but a regular steel, like S30v steel can run you over 100 bucks. AUS8 steel has an okay rust resistance, has pretty good edge retention and is a softer steel, resulting in easy sharpening. I am also thinking about getting a Leatherman Wingman. I would also recommend the spyderco tenacious, but I feel that 8Cr13Mov steel is just a little bit lower grade than AUS-8. The spyderco tenacious is around 35 bucks and the Ontario Rat 1 has a 3.5 inch blade, weighs around 5 ounces and is around 27 dollars on amazon
Personally, I’ve had better luck getting knives at either Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas.
Alright. I own around 30 knives (not including kitchen knives). I never leave home without my gerber paraframe tanto(at least) and/or my buck bantam lockback (at most). Thats pocket knives. On outings of hunting, hiking, camping or more depends on what kind of blade you should use.
Also on outings you are gonna wanna have a coleman (or a durable brand like that) utensill pack. It has a food knife, spoon, fork, and bottle opener all compact in 1 tool. Also you should get a little case for it. I have a case for mine. I have used the coleman for 4 yrs and never replaced it (its a really helpful tool). Tell me if this helps.
Buck bantam bbw is good
I have the ll bean multitool
Personally, I love my P.E.C.K. single blade titanium knife best of all (Owned 7 different knives over the years) it’s light, stays sharp a long time and sharpens easily. That’s what you want anyways. You’re not going to stop a bear with it (2″ blade) but that’s why I have a 4# axe.
If your willing to take on a black or grizzly with a 4# axe! more power to you.
Buy a leatherman Rebar It’s a Good all around tool
I have a Kershaw Ken Onion pocket knife and a Gerber Scout multi-tool. Thats all i ever need. They’re both about $50, and they have a lifetime warranty. And FYI, WD-40 is NOT oil, it is a lubricant that removes oil. The best lubricant that I have found is 3-in-1 oil. If your tired of searching for the perfect pocket knife, just go ahead and get you a Kershaw.
Swissarmy knives are great and long lasting.
I agree
I have the leatherman Skeletool and I think it is pretty good I just wish it had saw blade on it
I’m thinking of getting the spyderco tenacious. Does anyone have any experience with this knife?
Ill do some digging and get back to you on that. personally I have no experience with it.
I’m thinking of either getting the spyderco tenacious, the spyderco resilience or the leather man crater c33L
does anyone have any experiance with the bg folding scout knife?????
Thank you for considering my knives.
Perfect for a boy scout like yourself would be the sheath folding knife.
Stay safe.
Bear Grylls
I had an experience with that particular knife, own a Scharade now; enough said.
I have the knife. It’s an okay knife but I prefer a Kershaw Assisted over it.
I love the Gerber Dime multi-tool. Since I use it for fixing odd jobs around school and campouts. It seems mine is better than my fellow scouts with their fancy sheath blades and tools.
gerber and bg knives are THE best
you should try to get a knife made in the usa as they are usually better quality
my choices are anything from the scout store, spyderco, and kershaw
NEVER USE WD-40 ON A KNIFE BLADE!!! WD-40 is not an oil, it is light kerosene- which disperses water and is slightly corrosive, thereby stripping any protective layers of oil OFF the blade. Use a light machine oil for lawnmowers or blades instead!
I’ve been using WD-40 on my knives for years. They all work fine. The fact that Wd-40 is slightly corrosive is a good thing because that is what helps it remove rust and gunk from knife blades. It’s not corrosive enough to do any damage to your knife.
Actually no one but the people who make WD-40 know what the ingredients are. It’s a closely guarded company secret. So you are incorrect about the kerosene.
WD-40’s main ingredient is fish oil. WD stands for Water Displacement. Designed to spray moisture out of military radios in Vietnam. Great for loosening up old, rusted knives. It will lube ok. Feel more comfortable with real oil such as 3-in-1. Just sayin’
Wrong. The fish oil thing is a myth. go to the WD40 web and look at their “WD-40 myths”
Copied this from the WD-40 site in regards to weather the product is toxic or not:
“If swallowed, call physician or poison control center immediately” Any questions now?
That Irrelevant. Nobody said anything about toxicity. But since you bring it up. WD-40 is not toxic enough to kill you if you swallow a few drops. I know because I have when cutting an apple with my freshly oiled knife. I experienced no ill effects. As long as you dont go around drinking it you’ll be fine.
i want a carbon fiber zero tolerance blade if u want a real knife get a ZT they are great and are made in the USA they are expensive though
make sure your knife is legal
my knife is a CRKT M16 01kz and i got it for $18 on sale and it’s awesome
The leatherman sidekick is a pretty durable multitool. I have been able to take apart and put back together my bike for travel using just the multitool itself. I think that it could use a few more tools, but it covers all of the basics. It’s also fantastic for making arrows considering it has a saw, blade, and a file. Would recommend if you’re looking for a multitool.
swiss army knives are the BEST! I never leave home without it! But my gerber lockback is awesome too.
Swiss Army knives are cool, but WAY too bulky. You are way better off with a Leatherman tool.
Which one should I get?
want… leatherman sidekick… but… can’t…afford
Hey delta force it sounds cool being a para rescue man. Tell me about it.
As you can tell by my name i hunt and when doing so i use a gerber dagger.
P.S you are right delta force.
looks like good stuff. single blade knives are good for doing the dirty work
I havev my dad’s 50 year old boy scout knife and it is my sharpest knife
I went to smoky mountain knife works and went out side to the blacksmiths shp an made an awsome railroad spike knife the old fasion way with a hamer and anvil
I have a Kershaw burst ($20), a victorianox officer Suisse ($40-50), classic blue handled
Scout knife ($0), a random multitool, and a random lockback knife.
Swiss army knives for life! Go Scouts!
Meh… there not too bad. Most have non locking blades which always comes back to bite me.
I found a $1 dollor locking blade at walmart the brand? ozark trail 3 in a half inch blade and it’s serated to. also has a clip & a black heavy duty handel. good knife easy to open and easy on the wallet to.
No offense but those knives are junk. I own a knife restoration company and I buy those knives so I can practice taking them apart and removing rust. The blade is extremely wobbly and the locking mechanizum is very cheap and unreliable. I would get another knife if I where you.
Ya listen to knife expert. I had one of those Walmart knives once…
I accidentally dropped mine and the blade flew out
well….for one buck that’s still pretty good
doctorawesome247, make me.
I got one to I tried to cut a weed with it the knife broke.
well i dont think that they are that weak. but they are very cheap non the less
I just got a custom S30V steel, engraved, rubber handle Buck Alpha Hunter!
my dad got me a spyderco knife i want to keep it in my room but my dad says i’m not responsible enough so he keeps it his room.what can i do so my dad thinks i’m reponsible?
You should do stuff like doing things without being asked and be extra careful with it when he is around
If you have your Toten Chip then show all the things you’ve learned by earning it. Also be very serious when he lets you use it and maybe after time he’ll understand that your responsible.
i found a knife while hiking and it has scratches on the blade. What should i do to fix it?
scratches on a blade cant really be fixed.
Unless you buff them out
#folding110hunter by buck is by far the best!
The all in one tolls are great for camping.
Swiss Army Victorinox; use it for life.
This article was helpful. Thank you.
Do not get boy scout knives they are horrible quality!
Why are they horrible? Mine has never eve b roken on me and what you say is hard to beleive, unless you were whittling on rebar or something.
The steel is low quality compared to a similarly priced knife. Though BSA does have a full replacement warranty.
leatherman multitools rock ( I got a sidekick it rules)
i like gerber knives because of the type of blade and strength of the blade
Gerber is cool
I have gerber knives from 1987, 1998, and 2013 and they are all still fully functional. If you want a GREAT quality knife, buy gerber (or a buck knife) đ
i love marine gerber knife i all so love to hunt
Kabar and buck are both companies that make more than one model Of knife. And also kabar is older than buck it has just had several names.
Of course they make more than one knife! Buck and Ka-Bar are equally good companies however I believe Buck has been around longer
Buck Knives: 1902 Over 75 models.
K-Bar Knives: 1898 Over 100 models.
I like the Swiss Army Tinker Boy Scout Edition. And I also like the Boy Scout Huntsman (Swiss Army).
I have a yellow & green knife which says “Venturing BSA” on the blade anybody know what brand it is?
if it doesnt say on the bottom of the blade then assume that it is a Chinese off-brand
You think you are so cool! >:-O
I got a mora scout knife
its fixed bladed with a 3 and 7/8 inch blade
it also has a nice brass studed leather sheath
$30 new on e bay!
I found it on Amazon for $16.00. sounds like you got ripped off. moras are a good brand though.
My knife is a bear grylls sheath knife and it works just fine!
I have a benchmade 530 $89 at rei
i like a verity of knives from my benchmade to my cammileus i love them all
swiss army. period.
I agree not only are they usefull they are easy to use. End of story period.
you cant use a swiss army to baton, or skin a deer, how bout break plexi glass! No matter how functional swisses are remember they cannot do everything. If you are headed into the wilderness, ( i dont mean to some public campground!) a heavy duty folder or or fixed blade is the way to go.
agreed. i have a variaty of small knives and multitools and i find that i prefer small multitools with pliers, file, screwdrivers, a knife or two, etc. as opposed to large knives or multitools.
Amen
i prefer Gerber pocket kines because it come with life time warranty and the trust able
Try a Leatherman.They are Great!
totally try a leatherman sidekick
I have a rusty pocet knife and it’s rusty. My dad says it’s to expensive to buy rust remoiver. What should I do. :]
I say that you should ask someone who is willing to remove the rust for free.
Soak it in “Coke” for a few days; rub it down well with a plastic scrubber and then wash it thoroughly in warm soapy water. Dry it off and rub it down with knife oil (only) and wipe it down again. Might not get all of the rust but should remove most of it. May repeat it again for even better results.
apply WD-40 and let it sit for a minute or two. then rub it with a cloth. remove thick rust with WD-40 soaked steel-wool.
Metal Glo also works great. it polishes too!
Try sanding it all off with a normal piece of heavy duty sandpaper. Or, if you have a wire wheel, try that, but be careful!! đ
dont use heavy duty, it will scratch the blade very badly. use 240 grit or higher.
Swiss Army knives, buy it for life.
I just got a new SOG Tactical Tomahawk. its pretty darn good.
Check out the buck bravo, buck csar-t,cold steel
I just got a sog autoclip mini(2.68 in blade) very light and comfortable to carry(1.7 oz) it has a coil sprig tensioned pocket clip that works well on any surface thickness. The adjustable thumstud can fit my hand nicely, my only complaint is its so light, i forget it is in my pocket, i have lost a knife because of that, but thats what the pocket clip is for. — nice to carry, easy one hand open, and reasonably priced
Cold steel rajah 3 is a amazing knife, its 45$ on the Internet and has a kukri blade style for most exelent chopping.
Kershaws are great knives
I greatly dislike kershaw I have owned 3 all have broken within months, best one is the tremor.
Kershaw has an ecelant warranty and will gladly replace all of your broken knives. Give them another chance!
Cold Steel Recon1 is the best. It is expensive, but it is worth it.
Cold Steel Recon 1 is the best. I own it. It is $60, but it is worth it!
cold steel is bad
The Kershaw skyline is an awesome knife!
Kershaw volt 2 is the only way to go. 30$ at bass pro! I have it my self, I love the Assisted Opening!!!
The gerber para frame is a sharp small good knife all round
Benchmade and Spyderco make great folding knives, and if you look online you can find them for good prices.
is frost cutlery a good brand?
definitely . frost knives are great, inexpensive knives!!!!
They’re cheap. thats about their only perk.
If your looking for a great knife thats light, tough, and some what inexspenive. Should check out the A.G Russel Feather lite one hand knife. It’s around 35 dollars but it gets great reviews. And is really easy to open with one hand. Also if you buy it from his website you get a garuntee that you choose how long it last and what covers it.
Whats your guys take on the SOG SEAL Pup? Looks like a solid knife to me but I would like some feed back. Please respond!
Gerber daggers are the best! they are so much better then ka-bars! My dagger could tear your ka-bars apart!
I’d go with swiss Army with 2 blades and a mini saw/ file combo (Fireman). It has 2 blades in case one breaks missusing it in a survival circumstance, the file can be used as a sparker and the saw to cut tough things like animal bones.
good suggestion
get a scharade or an eye brand. both german made with carbon steel
Go swiss Army with 2 blades and a mini saw/ file combo. 2 blades in case one breaks missusing it in a survival circumstance, the file can be used as a sparker and the saw to cut tough things like animal bones.
I have a kabar. I use it for skinning and gutting coons and rabbits.
A ka bar will work for skinnig, but that is not what it was designed for so it will not do it as well as a Buck knife
ka-bars are way awseomer than that buck whatever
BUCK ROCKS!!!!
chad is right in this case… a buck is superior to ka-bar when it comes to skinning. Buck is a renowned company that his been in business a lot longer then Ka-bar. if I was to take a ka-bar and a buck and compare how well they did skinning a deer, the Buck would be sharper, and could do the job quicker then any ka-bar. Buck has and will always remains the number one hunting knife company, and one of the top 5 knife companies.
You have no idea what you are talking about dude.
Just shot two ducks today. Used my Buck 110 to dress them(which by the way ninja works way better then a Ka-bar) Time to make them into duck jerky!
Look ninjaman123 ka-bars are good fighting knives. but for hunting/skinning a Buck knife is the BEST choice.PERIOD. And please stop insulting Gerber they are a great company.
ka-bars can do everything and gerber cannot
I had a Ka-Bar for a while when I was a Para rescue man. But I switched it out for a Gerber dagger. I still use that dagger today…almost seven years after I was discharged. I’m afraid you’re wrong, Gerbers can do just as many things as Ka-bars. Take it from a Veteran.
A ka-bar is a killing knife designed for the military it is a knife ment for stabbing ever noticed the uncomenly sharp point on it plus it’s a fixed blade knife so if you triped and fell on it you would probably die. The point is it is a dangerous knife to carry and I don’t suggest it ninga.
If you want a good knife. Get the Bear Grylls folding sheath knife. Its sharp and it cuts wood like heck. Iive in Alaska, I should know.
that knife is terrible it broke and the blade snapped when i was whittling
The blade om that knife is a 1/4 inch thick! what where you whittling… re-bar??
If you want a smaller version of the Bear Grylls folding sheath knife, try the folding scout knife. I have one, and it is lightweight, has a pocket clip and lock back, plus dual thumb-stud. Its awesome!
Duck season starts in TWO days!!!!! I’m so pumped!!!=)=)
the answer is a ka-bar you can use them for everything i always carry one when hunting or fishing
KA-BAR is not the best knife company in the world ninjaman! It is a great company but it is not the best! And I already have the answer… The Buck 110 Hunter! it can beat a Ka-bar a hundred times over when it comes to skinning!
A Buck knife is the ONLY answer when it comes to hunting! USMC Ka-bars are not designed to be skinning knives. They are designed to kill people (Which they do well)
you hunt?
Sure do! how bout you?
A really awesome knife is the Pazorada by CRKT amazing or any big name brands are great too but i recommend the pazorda
I’m not a scout but I’m really need a knife for a survival kit any suggestions on what type, I like ka bar and gerber, but any ideas
Go swiss Army with 2 blades and a mini saw/ file combo. 2 blades in case one breaks missusing it in a survival circumstance, the file can be used as a sparker and the saw to cut tough things like animal bones.
I would go with a Bear Grylls compact fixed blade or a Gerber LMF II ($70 amazon)
a good knife is benchmade mini griptilian. it is expenseve but better than others.
If you want a good knife if you are a scout get a ka-bar i own 6.
I too own a Ka-bar; use it for gutting my deer. It’s not a marine knife either. It has a 4″ blade; hardly a killing knife a marine would carry into battle. Cost about $38.00 w/ sheath.
Cool,I own a pocket knife myself.
Cool but i own 27 pocket knifes.
i know what knife that i want, but i can’t find one that won’t fall apart… where should i buy one that wont fall apart as i’m useing my magniesem fire starter?
what kind of knife are you using?
i always use a ka-bar
I wasnt talking to you ninja! Although Ka-Bar is one of the best brands out there I do not highly recommend them for scouts as they WHERE built for marines and not for Boy scouts.
Hey Scouts:
WD-40 is not an oil, itâs purpose is to loosen rusty bolts and similar items (Please read the label). 3 in 1 oil will work for knives but can be toxic to some people. Always use a knife oil as it offers superior lubrication and protection and is not dangerous if minimumly consumed. Also, never use food oils, they will gum up the pivot and can spoil like any food source item; again causing illness.
It is a solvent and a lubricant. It will work fine scouts!
WD-40 works fine scouts, dont listen to trail monkey
WD-40 is perfectly ok to use on knives. It is both a lubricant and a solivant.
Even the gear guy says to use it. As usual you dont know what you are talking about trail monkey
I did as Off-Trail monkey said and read the WD-40 lable; he is correct! It can be toxic if “ingested by fumes or orally”
we get it! buy yourself a ka-bar.
I never said it wasnt toxic! I just meant it is ok to use on knives!
Swiss Army all the way baby!!!
I know right
Their is this one great BSA multitool that is very nice for scouts, Their is a bigger simaler one that leaders would like, I have the smaller one and my dad has the bigger
one. They are green and come in a case. I would have a hard time describeing it.
I just finished a backpacking trip and I found a Gerber EVO jr while hiking! I oiled it up with some WD-40 and now it works good as new. It has an awesome flipper on it and is a good little tactical knife.
If you are looking for a knife, then get one you really like.
I
If you want a good, quality knife then get a kershaw chive!
I do not own one, but i have held one( in the smoky mountain knife works in tennesee).
what i like is a winchester or remington or northwest trail
Both Winchester and Remington make great fire-arms, I myself have a Rem. 870 Express 12 gauge. However both companies make low quality knives. Winchester makes very junky multi-tools. Go with a Leatherman, Gerber or Buck.
Leatherman Charge TTi, it is expensive but it is amazing.
No Boy Scouts are allowed to carry a fixed blade knife (on troop/pack activities). Cub Scouts are not allowed to carry aknife with a blade longer than 3 inches on pack activities. (I’m pretty sure.) It is implied in the artical that you can do both of the above.
How many times do I need to explain this… The BSA handbook says they PREFER you not carry a fixed blade.
I carry a fixed on every camp out.
Any boy scout can carry a fixed blade. It is up to the troop to decide if their boys are responsible enough to carry a fixed blade.
I agree
i will choose the gerber dime
get a schrade team primos folding knife. I have one and it’s never failed me, schrade is a good American brand
AppalationTrail is good
ive had 2 gerbers and they fell apart
best folding knife -buck
best multitool-leatherman
best small sheath -old timer
Go swiss baby !!!!
Go gerber, theyre sharp and inexpensive. You can get them at walmart same place where I got my ozark trail multi-tool
A good place to find relatively cheap and very good quality knives is a local gun show/ expo.I got a US Army Ranger folding survival knife at one and it has served me well in my years of scouting.
Where exactly did you get this “paratrooper” knife. If it’s not an auto or assisted knife then you probably got a cheap knock off. Also wheres it made, and by what company.
My dad served for eight years as an elite paratrooper in the USAF and he had a genuine jumper knife. It was cool but he couldn’t keep it when he was discharged. He would know if it was real or not if you could discribe it.
Buck and Gerber.
get the v46 gerber knife works good
my case xx really keeps its edge and is very useful
my sons troop allows the use of fixed blade knives and he uses my ka bar usmc knife and I have used it for over 10 years and it works great for him
Bear Gryles ultimit knife 50$ or more but worth i also recommend a cheap 5$ swiss army knife
go swiss knives
please tell me more about swiss knives
A mora companion, and an swiss army fieldmaster make an exelent combination for me. But for you maybe not. The knife (or knives) you carry should be based upon what you feel you should carry.
Get a Buck x tract
Got my multy tool last October for $5.50. For a hunting season bonus Very sharp Saw and knife blades perfect for scouts
Had my multy tool for since last October 4 hunting. sturdy handle and great sharp saw and blad . perfect 4 for scouter on the go!
Yay for Swiss army knives!!!
tru that
Check out Schrade’s carbon knives. Sharp, inexspencive and tough. Made in USA too.
I prefer the “Leader”.
The bad thing about carbon steel is that it cannot hold its edge and will rust very quickly.
Swiss army knives are really awesome, so if you don’t have one, you should get one.
That is what im gettin for Christmas dude. I have also had one before.
SWISS ARMY KNIFES ROCK!!!
someone needs to make a survivle gear guide.
Amen!
get a good one that you think is perfect. if you do not know or are sure which than get a good one that is nice and sharp, easy to handle, and has lots of functions.
Get a cold steel machete
NO WAY! Get a Gerber Bear Grylls Parang machete, you can use it as an ax!
Way!
Why do people keep using my name? Cut it out Knife Xpert! I know it was you because you made a similar comment before!
3 in One oil is better choice for lubricating a knife. (It is made by the same company that makes WD-40).
WD-40 is a lubricant and a solvent – it breaks things down. It can ruin a lock or the inner workings of delicate equipment. It can also remove finish or paint. It can also irritate the skin.
way to go
hmmmmmm… well how come all my knives and machetes are in great shape and I have been using WD-40 on them for 20+ years?!
WD-40 is not an oil, it’s purpose is to loosen rusty bolts and similar items (Please read the label). 3 in 1 oil will work but can be toxic to some people. Always use a knife oil as it offers superior lubrication and protection and is not dangerous if minimumly consumed. Also, never use food oils, they will gum everything up and can spoil like any food source item; again causing illness.
WD-40 can lubricate and clean a bike chain, too.
Your totally wrong dude! Yes WD-40 is toxic and i wouldn’t go around drinking it. But it is perfectly fine to use on knifes… It works especially good when sprayed into the locking mechanizium
A leather man sidekick is your best bet
Hurray for Swiss Army Knives!!!!!!!
Amen
Attention: I am changing my name to Delta 8 since that was my squad’s call sigh while I was a Special-ops paratrooper.
my troop alows fixed blades and the hand book discuregis them
The best knife you could possibly ever get is a swiss army knife. I had my Tinker for 3 years know and its still like it has just been took out of the package. (With some scratches on the handle, of course).
i’ve had my tinker for a few yuears too and it never fails to impress me
i like gerbers or buck fixed blade
I agree, an ax is the ultimite camping tool.
An 3/4 ax is the ultimite campers tool; you can chop, cut, and hammer most anything with it. My ax also has a knife in the handle for little things. Best thing about an ax is it’s better for staring down a bear; we’ve had to do that once.
The best thing for staring down a bear is a .44 Magnum or a .12 Gauge loaded with slugs.
A Gerber Bear Grylls Parang machete can beat an ax 100 times over! I have one and it rocks! The razer sharp blade can hack thru a 8 inch thick log in half the time an ax could! I am comparing it to my Gerber pack Pax which has lasted me 5 years now but the parang is much better and can clear brush as well while an ax cant!
Axes are awesome but a good knife will never let you down
Any knife less then $30 and made in china is not worth buying.
a swiss army knife is what I have and it has lasted me for a long time without dulling, get one with a lot of attachments though
Swiss knives are handy but most do not lock and me and my thumb have a grudge on non locking blades! Sure some of them lock but those cost a TON!(up to $240)
Time to buy a swiss army knife at new location. I bought a new S.A. Fireman – lockblade
w/ additional surrated blade, sissor and saw for $28.00 on e-bay. I then bought a second in a store for $36.00 for my son. The avarage swiss army lock blade cost around $44.00.
My SAK trekker has a one handed open lock blade, and only set me back 31 dollars. It comes with a free classic on Amazon, and is a quality tool.
Ok ok! I was wrong! BUT… your average every day Swiss knife does not lock. e.g. Spartan, Tinker etc… I even carried one in my kit bag while a para-trooper! But I cut myself more with that knife then with any other knife.
Smith and Wesson extreme ops CK105H knife is really great, and less then $15.
i want to buy one off those but my mom said i cant by one and i read the hole thing and
i relly want it
Carry an ax, knives are for wimps. You can open anything with an ax. If sharpened correctly you can whittle with it too.
Knives are not for wimps they are for The Prepared.
dude an ax is good but it cant beat a knife. Period. I personally love the Gerber LMF 2 fixed blade. I think you’ll agree this knife is not for wimps!
you try to go horse back riding with an ax on a 53 mile cattle drive.
Can’t cut food with an axe can’t carry an axe in your pocket easer to cut tape with a knive can’t whittle with a axe
Get a Kershaw!!!
Victorinox knives are the best I’ve ever used Gerber makes good ones too, but a $20
Victorinox will last you years.
No I would not take these swiss knives most do not lock and that is a big hazard! I looked it up and the ones that do lock cost a ton! Gerber is a good company though
how do i remove rust from a knife?
Sandpaper or steel wool
thanks!
Sure thing. But it will scratch up your blade. I have a old hunting knife that is a back up and it is REALLY scratched up but it still works good.
anybody who wants a good knife should check out the gerber assisted opening blade sold at most wal marts
No, a Buck QuickFire would be a better choice. Gerber is a good company but their assisted knifes are made in china. While Buck’s are made in Post Falls, Idaho!
I had an LMF 2 while in deployment and a Tactical Assault Paratrooper Knife (TAP-K) auto knife. but they only let me keep the LMF the TAP-K is illegal and ONLY available for the military which stinks because that was a good knife. oh well at least I now have a Buck quick fire assisted opening knife. Its not nearly as good or fast but is still a great USA made knife! take it from a Paratrooper… its a good knife!
I got a Buck QuickFire assisted opening knife and it ROCKS!!
So do I! I love it and I love Buck!
@slyfox I’ve noticed the oldest scouts realize they can do with less when they can pack all they need in a small space and end up packing lighter
I’ve noticed one thing more than anything about scouts with knives, the older the scout the smaller the knife. Every new scout wants the 20 function knife until it comes time to carry it on a backpack outing. That’s when the desire for a small one blade knife comes in handy. Weight and size become an important factor then. Personally, I use a single blade knife by PECK. Its titanium with a steel edge, weighs almost nothing, clips to a pocket if desired and only costs about $22.00 at Gander Mountain. I do own other knives; my other main knife is a Swiss Army altimeter that I use for elevation and temperature monitoring on outings. Its sissor is the most useful blade of the three offered. Again it comes down to preference.
not true with our scout troop! When I go camping/hiking I carry a Gerber LMF 2 fixed blade and a Gerber Bear Grylls parang machete for chopping limbs and to use as a hatchet.
Fixed blades and machettes are not allowed in scouting according to the guide to safe scouting. Your Scoutmaster should stop that right away.
Look kid, it clearly says in the boy scout hand book that they are “not recommended” to does not say the are illegal. Different troops have different rules about fixed blade and machetes. Let me tell you brother if you lived where I lived you would be glad to carry a fixed blade and a machete. Where I live the weather, mountains, cliffs and forests fight fiercely and you need a good solid fixed blade to fight back with. YOU try climbing a almost vertical cliff with buck brush everywhere with out a machete! Thank you for being concerned but us Idaho boys know what were doing.
My scoutmaster has nothing to stop. non of the guys(or me) have ever cut them selves or misused their fixed blades of machetes . secondly, it says in MY scout book that they are “not recommend” it does not say they are “not allowed” I live deep in the Idaho Mountains and you need a good solid fixed blade to get the job done.
If you want to buy a knife I could help u choose a good one please say how much u want to spend and what kind of a knife u want small med large fixed blade, classic lock back, trapper Swiss army, Multi tool, etc
OK this is a test. Lets say I want a 4 to 4 and 1/2 inch fixed blade what would YOU recommend?
i think carbon blades are better then stainless steel becuase they sharpen a hole lot better
Do thay stay sharp
Carbon is good for sharpablity, but it stinks in edge retention! If you want a REAL GOOD steel that is as easy to sharpen as carbon but as hard as ceramic then CMP S30V steel is the steel for you! Buck Knifes makes them for Cabelas. they are called the Alaskan Guide Sires of knifes.
my sister wants a pocketknife but i dont know what kind of knife to get her any suggestions?
@ireadalot. Ok let me think. Hmmmmmmmmmm… Oh! a Buck 55 hunter would be perfect! Or a Gerber Bear Grylls mini-scout. The Buck 55 is $30 on Amazon.com And the Mini scout is $12 on Amazon.com. hope these suggestions help! By the way, I like your name!
There is two brands I buy; Swiss Army Wenger and Leatherman. Both Swiss Army company give you quality knife but I like the design of the tools and blade of the Wenger over the Victorinox. Beside US made, Leatherman are very solid and durable. I recently got the Skelatool for $30 at Fry’s Electronic. Another model that I have and like is the Blast. It’s a midsize tool with knife, saw, scissor, file, pliers and other tools.
To me quality and material is very important because they determine the life of the tool. Knife made in China just does not seem to hold up.
The victorinox tinker or recruit are good choices also a buck lockback is good
no offence jj55 but a swiss army knife would not be a good idea because they do not lock and that can be a big hazard to little(and big) kids!
tinkers are the bomb
Swiss Army knive do lock, I use a Fireman; it has two locking blades, one standard and one surrated.
Knife xpert is right! most swiss knifes DO NOT lock. and the ones that do lock cost a bundle!
A Buck 55 or a Bear Grylls Gerber mini-scout or a Gerber Mini-Paraframe
I have 3 knives 2 of them are Gerber Gerber is my faverite brand
If you’re sister’s under 13, I recommend some sort of small multi-tool knife, possibly, if you can find it, Sheffield brand. If you’re sister’s like, over 13, maybe a larger knife, but not uncomfortably large. Also, ask her if she wants it fixed blade if she’s over 13. Those are my favorite kind. đ
I say a claus double blade 5$ at OSH
The gerber bear grylls are great knives they have serrated edges and rarely go dull. You can choose from a fiked 4.9″ blade or shorter folding blades the folding blades come w/ either a belt clip or military grade nylon sheath, both are the same size and are great knives. The only down side is they are a bit bulky.
I have the Ultimate knife, folding scout, parang, ultimate multi-tool and my brother has the mini-scout and the mini-multi tool. I think they could do a bit better job on the fixed blade. It still works but I lost the fire steel, the whistle and the sheath broke a little. I replaced it with a USA Gerber LMF II. Just take good care of your Ultimate knife and it will do fine(dont beat it up like I did!) great products! just wish they where made in the US. I totally agree with you me185!
I’ve got the Scout and its perfect for my uses but tenderfoots always complain about why you need to clean a knife after using it!
i have a buck bantam for 20$it is so awesome! buck is the best
were can i get a good knife
cabelas, sportsman’s warehouse, Bass pro, Amazon.com. I would get a Gerber LMF II or a Ka-bar Becker Champion. I would not recommend Ka-Bar fighting knifes Ka-bar is a super good company but their fighting knifes are meant for Marines not Boy scouts.
were can I find a good fixed blade knife
I suggest a Gerber LMF 2. $65 Amazon.com. Or a Ka-bar Becker BK2 $50 at Amazon.com is a nice light weight knife. I would not recommend a Ka-bar USA fighting knife. They are SUPER good knifes BUT they are meant for fighting more then utility. oh and irock the comment right below me, the Gerber suspension is $25 on Amazon.com. Really good and has a dependable locking system.
i wonder what the best knife brand is i am looking for a good multitool i am looking for one that is under $50.00
Gerber Suspention is 40$ at walmart.I have one it is AWSOME!!!!!!!!
I would have to go with Ben the Gerber suspension is only 25 bucks on amazon.com I have the BG(Bear Grylls) version of it and it is a good quality tool I would get one!
What is the best Buck knife?
All Buck knifes are good! Some of their best and most loved knifes are The 110 Hunter,55 hunter, vanguard and the infamous 119 spacial! Hope this helps!
I am getting a new Buck QuickFire assisted opening knife. Buck has the best quality control or their knives. My dad got a Buck Vanguard skinning knife and that thing wont get dull!! We gutted and skinned two deer and it has come no where near losing it’s edge!Buck is the best U.S.A. made company!
the Gerber Suspention is AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Ben! I have the Bear Grylls version of the Gerber Suspension. It ROCKS!!!! I carry it every day! It is SO handy!
Can weblose take knives on campouts
Get Kershaw knives. I have one and it is the best knife I have ever used, they also come with lifetime sharpening. Also, Leatherman knives are really nice and have a lifetime warranty on them. I have them both and I absolutely love them. The Buck knives are really sharp and durable, they also fit really nice into your hand. I have at least one of each of them. They are amazing, each with their own benefits and limitations.
You are right… Kershaw,Leatherman, and Buck are all top-of-the line knife companies. Gerber is another good one.I am thinking about getting a Buck Quickfire assisted opening knife to replace my old Buck redpoint 750.
Winchester knives are great too!!!!! but forget their multi tools.
Toatally.
i have 3 knives
I have 16 knifes.
I have 10 knives
@ The Rock. SWEET! how many fixed blades?
I have 38 knives plus two machetes and 3 hatchets
so do I
I don’t think the official boy scout and cub scout knifes are good… not only are they made in CHINA but the blades don’t lock! and I know from experience that non locking blades are junk. sorry BSA but its the truth.
chad 101 i have a bsa lockback made in the usa by BEAR MGC
Hooraaa!! Way to go BSA! I guess I was wrong! Thanks for correcting me on that one gunslinger! But they still do make a lot of knifes in china.
bsa whittler knife is good tho it nerer goes dull ive had it for years and havent sharpened it once and it still works great
what steel is it made of?
The Gerber USA made LMF II is heavy but is tough as nails and will get you out of a jam every time. Weather you are stranded in a mountain range or lost in the amazon it will always get you out with out a scratch! It is my hunting, survival, camping and hiking knife. always ready at my side.
I have a swiss army huntsman. multitool swiss army RULES. you can even get a multitool with a lockable blade. check victorinox.com if you do search swisschamp. its AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the GERBER Bear Grylls ultimate multi tool better. it has rubber non-slip grips, spring loaded pliers and the fine and serrated blades lock into position.
yes you can go to leatherman’s website almost all their stuff locks.
I have over 15 knives
Really how many fixed blades?
I have 16 knifes…5 folding knifes,2 multi-tools,1 swiss army knife,1 mini swiss army knife,1 Defender throwing knife,5 fixed blades, and 1 machete. my favorite fixed blade is the Gerber LMF 2.
does anyone have a good pocket knife if so what kind is it
A Bear Grylls Gerber scout would be a fine folder.
Buck 55 hunter, or the Kershaw Storm II…both made in U.S.
bsa lockback
BSA Swiss army climber glow it glows in the dark so you can always find it.
swiss army tinker
I think the boy scout knifes are the best. You can find them for 20 bucks at your local scout shop.
Cool… but do they have any fixed blades?
no
knife guy, how many knifes do you own?
iThink every Scout should have the official Scout Knife, like iHave.
That depends… what kind of steel is it made of and where is it made?
I also got a really nice foldable knife at a flea market! Hasn’t broken yet, just needed a little tightening because of a friend flipping it open.
Leatherman Blast, all around, fairly light, useful tools, rugged.
Yeah Leathermans have defiantly earned their place in the knife world. However I much rather have a GERBER bear grylls ultimate multi-tool.
I have a Buck 412 lockback knife, a Victorinox Huntsman multipurpose knife, an L.L. Bean multi-tool, and a Swiss Army knife.
cool=0
But you should have at least one fixed blade knife.
I bought a stainless steel locking blade for 2 bucks!it worked great!but i lost it.:(
IM A EAGLE SCOUT
lol
NICE DUDE!!!=) Congratulations!!!! I am a Star scout but I hope to have my Eagle buy the time I am 17.
i’m going to get my eagle when i’m 13
ummmmm… I dont think thats possible.
Hey,anyone have a Gerber LMF II? Everyone else says itâs really good.If you have used it or have it give me your opinion! Thanks all!
i have a dozer knife đ
cool! But I would like to know about the Gerber LMF II.
Are half jagged half fine blades okay?
Yeah I think they work great!
I like fine blades better, easier to clean and sharpen
But with a good serrated edge you can cut rope, wood, bone even metal! plus, Smiths (a sharpening stone company) makes a sharpener that can sharpen serrated edges. (PP1 Pocket Pal multi-function sharpener)
I have a serrated edge on my Winchester multi tool.
the correct term is “serrated” not jagged
very good but hard to whittle and sharpen
i have two pocket knifes and i really like yours how would you buy one if your only 11 the ones i like are the Swiss army knifes do you have any of those cas i cant tell
All you need is a good knife made in the USA . buck knifes kershaw gerber MADE IN CHINA. Benchmade KA BAR made in America. Save your money get a good knife made in USA
swiss made is kool, 2
Buck knives are not made in china….
And neither Gerber or kershaw makes ALL of their knifes in china! They make many in the USA.
You do know that ka-bar and benchmade have knifes made in china right? GERBER,KERSHAW and BUCK are three of the best knife companies out there! You shouldn’t be insulting them buy saying that they make all of their knifes in china.
All Gerber Knives are built in Portland Oregon
I am sorry to say but no… Gerber makes most of their knifes in china. But they do make a few in Portland, OR. this includes my Gerber LMF 2 fixed blade. so you are right and wrong…but believe me I wish you were 100% right!
dude, i have a great winchester knife and i have no idea where its from!( i got it as a
present.)
If its winchester then its made in china
Gerber mini-Scout rocks! it is small and light, but big enough
for heavy-duty.
The compact scout is just a little small for me. No offense to the knife it self but it is just a little small. But it is a great back up knife if you ever lose your main knife. I have the Bear Grylls Gerber Scout and it works pretty good. The Bear Grylls folding sheath knife is heavy duty but folds down. Another great knife is the Buck Red Point 750 folding knife.
the best knife you will ever have is a case brand medium folder
That is REALLY debatable! There are tons of great knifes out there to buy. But if the CASE works best for you then congratulations! You have found your dream knife! Your “dream knife” is the perfect knife for your needs. Different people have different needs, once they find the perfect knife for their needs they have found their “dream knife!”
my dream knife is the SOG trident
i would really love a microtech knife but they are way too expensive
Get a usa made BUCK.
what type of buck knife should i buy
get the BUCK 110 folding hunter.
where do i find pocketknifes to buy ?
i want a really nice, decent single blade pocket knife. any places u know where i can find 1
I would look for a pocket knife from any quality sporting goods store. I ask to see it before I would buy it. Make sure you buy the right knife for your needs. Also make sure it is the right size for you. If the knife is to large for you, you could have troble controling it. That could make it dangrous for you or people around you.
were do i fide a good knife
Anywhere.
Where can I find the 3″ multiple tool knife
where do i go to buy knifes
you guys seen the new bear grylls [BG] collection from gerber?
Yeah I just got the scout and its epic!
I agree. I have the Scout,Parang and Ultimate knife. All are really cool. But my favorite is the Parang! I find that there are just a few flaws with the Ultimate knife.Still a great knife!
what is better?
-a single blade lockback
OR
-a swiss-army type multi-tool?
Im stuck i have one of each but dont know which one to take on a campout
plz help
A single-blade lockback is great they can do many things, they are small, light, and are easy to carry in your pocket.Swiss army knives are good if you spend a lot of times in the out doors, but are bulky when worn casually like in the city. It is up to you for what you want to buy so choose wisely.
A “swiss army” style knife is very handy for opening a can and tightening a screw, and the “spear point” blade is good for poking plastic wrappers(mind that the blade doesn’t close and cut you) however it is not as easy to clean, harder to open, and the blade is thinner(good and bad) a “single blade lock back” knife is a simple and dependable knife that is easy to open(not so much to close, but is sturdier and safer) it has a thicker blade(durable) and
swiss army knifes do not have spear points.A spear point is a double edged blade meant mostly for spears and throwing knifes.
a swiss army type multi tool is what i would chose
why not both?
On outings i take my lockblade and a swiss army knife or a multitool
can only take 1 on campouts
take the multi tool knife
Get a bear grylls Ultimate multi-tool and you’ll be in like flinn! that thing has every thing in a Swiss Army knife but the blades lock When you open them. Much more safe!! Plus Bear is figure head to 2 million scouts world wide and chef scout in the UK! So you can trust his products!
Not completely true. My swiss army has everything except the pliers of the BG Ultimate, and the blade DOES lock open.
@ Some, body. swiss army tools that lock are VERY expensive(up to $240)! Plus most typical swiss army knifes do not lock. The BG also has an advanced locking system that most other multi-tools don’t have. THANK YOU for commenting though!! SO many people will make a comment and for so reason never come back to BL! Thank you so much for commenting!

Hey I’m looking at you add in boys life magazine, “Gear Guy’s 8 great picks” and I wanted to know which knife do you think is the best out of the 8 great picks? I also wanted to know if all of the tools on the Geber Fit locked into place? The last thing I wanted to know was where could I purchase one of these knives?
the sog auto clip is lite durable sharp and nicely priced I’d recomend any sog
I have a buck knife u want it
what kind?
All of my qseutions settled-thanks!
I have a Uncle Henry Schrade knife and a Case Sod Buster(complete opposites right?) an they are all i use. they are great because they hold an edge terrifically and have a thick blade. So they are in my opinion much better than a Swiss army knife, Swiss army knifes are better for whittling though.
i want a bucknife
If its a folder you want get the BUCK red point 750. If you want a fixed blade get an Alaskan Guide.
I have alot of knives but my gerber is the best,u should buy one
i got a gerber tempo is that good?
buck is the best, the grip and blade are incredible.
I think gerber knives are the best my grandpa has had his for several years and it is still great!!!!!!!!
i use my dads cub scout knife, i think it is vintage and they dont make the color or the decoration on it anymore
i love multi tool kives
Schrade knives are the Bomb
Swicth blades are the best
dont make us go through that debate again!!!!
Victorinox has THE BEST pocket knives EVER. I’ve had mine for 4 years and it’s still great.
Leatherman has really high quality knives with many awesome features!!!
I agree with flute
man and legoman22
get a browning 3.5 inch folding lockback i have had one for 4 years and still works like new.
does it really? i strongly doubt that!
I don’t!A good well taken care of knife can last you decades!
wincheser is the BEST u should get 1
i own ka bar knives that i use for canping with the scouts is that to big to use
For marines not boy scouts
I agree with Anonymous! Ka-Bar is a good company but their knifes are more for fighting then anything! Like you said “For marines not Boy scouts.”
Gerber has great knives. check out the gerber paraframe 2 partially serrated
swiss is the best
NO MUTLI TOOL KNIVES ARE
same thing ddog!!!
i’ve got an old lockback llbean knife
GO BEAN

I am saving up for a 45 dollar gerber tool.
Get a SOG or don’t get anything, I have a trident a field pup and their multitool, the field pup even saved my life.
i have a jagwire multi tool and it great
GERBER AND LEATHERMAN ARE GOOD KNIFES

i find the bst knives by going to bass pro. my fav. is Gerber multi knife. becaus has alot of multi tools.
I have three knives.a gerber lockblade, a generic leatherman and a multi-tool.when i’m whittling i use the gerber and for other stuff the leatherman and multi-tool.
I just bought an m16 knife from crkt for $25 and it is the bomb! Well maybe not the bomb because those are dangerous, but buy any m16 knife model. They’ve got a double lock and is almost impossible to have to fold onto ones hand. It’s the shizzle!
get an aegis from SOG. IT IS AWSOME
I prefer single blade lockblades the only multi tool I’d get would be
a military grade leatherman
get the leatheman wave black oxide with bit kit it is so worth it it is an amazing knife with an amazing warrenty
I prefer single blade lockblades
i collect knives. i got swiss army knives, pocket knives and multi tools. i have 12 knives and there still comin!
I have used the Buck 110 exclusively for the past 10 years. It is heavy, but I hardly notice it in my nylon belt sheath.
The “Wave” from Leatherman is great in that it has “one thumb” opening and closing lock blades. Carry it on your belt and you’ll find many uses for the pliers around camp.
I find the best knives are the swiss made Victorinox. they are the original makers of knifes for the Swiss army. I like them so much I bought a 31 tool one while visiting switzerland!
At Mejer they are expensive but very good!
I have a good Appalachian Trail lock blade knife I got at Lowes home emprovement it is easy to sharpen -and stays sharp! So if you want a low matananance knife you’d want to get one.
i have a swiss multi function all purpose tool. it’s great you have all of the standards that are in this article .
all of you need to get a case double x they are great
i carry a gerber clutch and a good locking blade will be getting a spyderco tenacious when i carry a sheath knife its the mora clipper

I love the website!!!!!!!!!!
most state have laws that do not permit switch blades BSA does not allow them do to safety concerns I recamend small buck knives also dacor does a very good job
If you own a Leatherman, you need look no further.
switchblades are perfectly leagal in any stete, if there is a law about them it is unconstatutinal…..we have the right to bear arms
Actually switchblades are illegal.(take it form an expert!)it is STATE LAW that you are not allowed to posses a switchblade. however autos and assisted opening knifes are allowed.
if your looking for a good knife get a gerber knife i have one and i’m not getting a new knife unless it’s a gerber
i have a CRKT M16-01KZ and it works great. I just need to find a good sharpener for it.
i love switchblades on pocket knives it so awsome and cool,i feel like to buy all of the switch blades……
For the trail:
1. A belt clip or big hole for carabiner
2. Less than 4″ blade
3. Lockback stainless
4. Part serration
5. Sharpen daily
6. Cheap to replace
OR you can just clip am army ranger knife to your belt [like moa] and go.
Swiss army all the way
i also have a original pocket knife a well abot inch long and has a blade a file thing and pliers in the side as well as a scredriver in the side and a curved knife u wear around neck on chain never pops open and i would say its perfect

Agree
I 2nd that!!!!
Same

i like multitools but they get dirty to fast
GET A MAGLITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
right company, wrong product. if youre going to give money to maglite, spend it on flashlights
my Gerber Evo Jr has a flipper in the back just push your finger down on it witch is connected directly to the blade and it opens it is a lot safer and is not mechanical so i can control how fast it opens i its A WHOLE BETTER
i have crkt (clubia river knives and tools) its awesmone
it actually spelled columbia river knife and tool
i got a clean cut blade and a saw blade
get gerber diesel multitool its great
i say that boys should have there own knife for free
AMEN.
No. boys need to pay for their knifes. if you buy something with your own $$ you are going to be more carefull with it then if it was just given to you.
i need a good knife
i suggest u get a GERBER there all pretty good however i think the PARAFRAME is a great knife at a great price
Buy a Swiss army Farmer
i have a brook hunter mo-tool axe, great tool but awkward, and big
Where can I get a kabar?
i got a tiwan k-bar
get a GERBER
dont get a gerber! (chinese made)
OK just cause it made in china doesn’t mean its bad its just made to Gerber specifications some really good knives are made in china so just because its made in china does not mean its bad OK may i ask what knife you have random person in the comments
Gerber still makes their best knifes in Portland OR.
I have 6 knives some of them are a sog seal pup, butterfly knife, and a spyderco.
thats cool!!!!!!!!!
Where can I get a good old fashioned boy scout knife?
Some people might say Case knives.. but theyre losing quality. and theyre expensive.. I would say get a victorinox swiss army knife. The swiss army farmer pocketknife is a good knife but it isnt considered a boy scout knife, but it will last a lifetime. I carry a Great eastern cutlery stockman pocketknife (a lot of birthday money)
How do u think CASE knives are losing quality
Ok it may be exspensive but get a swis champ model. it has 33 attachments including a ballpoint pen and a small spatula. lokin for smaler? cant help ya there đ
you could buy a imperial kamp king they are nice (i have one) and they are cheap on e bay the official boy scout knife is based on it or you can buy old fashioned scout knives at almost any scout shop
i have 10
Switchblades are completly legal and BSA doesn’t like them because they don’t trust younger scouts to not be instinctive and start fighting with them. So to those of u such as hippiescout115 and replyer befor u start spouting off, u should do ur research. In the case of sheath knives, they are completely safe if kept in their sheath when not being used
no the switch blades are federaly illigal
i want a swichblade
if you want a fast draw knife get the kershaw volt you press the flipper and opens really fast and the steel is really hard its Rockwell hardness is 58-60 its reliable and practically a switchblade buts perfectly legal blade stay sharp for a long time and its shavein sharp
i have a 7 inchblack hawk survivil knife it does its good and good
but it was 125 dollorsbut it relay is worth it. unbevlible sharpness.
-Survivor Expert
I use a united states marine Corp 7 and a half inch kabar
i use navy seals scuba 1 ft long scuba nife
Marines have onaly the best.
Military hardware never fails to impress me. I have an Army Ranger Knife in my pocket as I am writing this.
i want a switchblade but sadl they r illegal đ
you could get a spring assist they are nice
the knives that i like are Gerber, they are very reliable and i have kept my 2.5 inch Gerber and it still works very well. As long as u sharpen it after every other campout it will last you forever.
i might have the same one as you! how many functions does yours have? mine just has one
does anyone remember that article that was written about a waterproof, no-slip knife? I think it was called the ladybug or something
The 100% rustproof (scientifically proven) knife is made with H-1 Japanese steel. Spyderco is the only manufacturer that I can find that makes knives with H-1. They are pricy about 100 bucks, so if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative that would be great.
firefly
ya its a spyderco i think they are high quality but actualy a pretty long blade ( my dad has one for work) the main thing is they are all serrated good for some things but bad for whittling
The Esee Izula is a great knife, I use it for everything. It is a fixed blade knife, so it is much sturdier that the average pocket knife. The knife is meant to be worn around the neck (with sheath) for fast access. It is great for jobs more commonly associated with scouting, such as cutting rope, being used with fire starting tools, etc., and also is good for hunting and fishing.
My knife just has one 3-inch blade and it works great. I love it!!
If you are looking for a really good swiss army knife, try the cybertool lite. It has 20 tools on it.
i love swiss army knives they r lite and have a lot of tools on them they rock i use 3
NO
I am with Shorty not HippieScout151 I like swiss army knives & I collect them.
go with a spring assisted knife they r better
and…NO
I am with you HippieScout151 spring assisted knifes are dangerous & the spring’s could break or the spring is too powerful & if your whittling it could break the wood & cut Your fingers & retract back in & not come out, or the spring’s is not strong enough & opens up while it is in your pocket & could cut you.
i disagree the kershaw volt is very reliable and does not open in your pocket it is quick draw and is easy to open it holds a edge for a long time and is perfectly legal it has a nice design and is an overall nice knife
in the kershaw volt the spring pushes against the part of the blade that pivots so it actually keeps it closed until its opens to about 20 degrees it is a very nice knife 27$ i reccoend it
joe schmoe
try a traditional pocket knife
YOU GO MAN!!! I LOVE YOU!
i like the traditional pocket knives THE BEST i dont have the volt and i want a case knife for my birthday
i am looking for a swichblade were would i find one?
dude-there illegal
knifes are not illegal dude
Switchblades are illegal if your a scout, but knifes are not illegal, so Sora you must eve read it wrong.
@traiango
switchblades are illegal
if your a scout but they are usually not illegal.
swichblade are illegal if there over 4 inches
switchblades are only illegal in some states and are frownd apon by the bsa i have 1 no 1 cares at my summer camp
not in oregon
BSA doesen’t allow switchblabes!
Their called Switchblades not Switchblabes & BSA doesn’t allow them because you just push a button to open it so people got their finger cut when opening it up.
usually you can find some good ones on bladeplay, but they’re somewhat expensive
cutco knives are the best they never rust and they are used in the millitary. also known as ka-bar
I use a Cutco Pocket Knife, not only does it not rust, but it’s way cheaper than the suggested knife in the July issue, (Spyderco Salt 1) the best part is it’s made here in the United States, and guarenteed forever. I typically call my local cutco office and they send it back and have it sharpened every year, although I must admit it doesn’t ever need sharpened.
Hey Sweet,
does Cutco make multi-tool pocket knives? My Swiss army knife has a saw, scissors, tweezers, and even a magnifying glass! If your camping its really nice to have a multi-tool knife.Oh and how much do Cutco knife cost?Just wondering what the cost was because I collect knifes and might look into buying one đ
I got a small pocket knife from selling popcorn at boy scouts. It is not a high quality knife, but it does not have to be a high quality, all i use it for is a camp out once in a great while. SO, don’t buy an expensive pocket knife if you don’t use a O.K. pocket knife once in a great while
Swiss army knives are very reliable and they do not rust easily. They are so convenient with the tooth pick and tweezers that I wear(a small one)on a necklace.I have always been very pleased with every Swiss army knife that i have ever bought!
i bought a 3-set of mossberg knives and they r awesome
I am looking for a knife since my old one is really worn out. I need a medium, sharp, lockout blade and not a lot of tools on it besides the knife. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
the Gerber metolius. big always sharp blade looks awesome and is extremely sturdy. most sturdy folder there is
I wish BSA had regulations on fixed blade knoves because I have a really nice fixed blade knofe that is a lot better than my folding knofe but I can never use it.
I meant Knive not knove
i have alot of knives but i use my buck lock blade, redhead 3 blade, and a swiss, i recently ordered a redhead 2 blade from bass pro
I need a knife thats sharp not to big and cheap does any body know one [please help me]
you should get the spyderco tenacious. its around 30 dollars and has a wickedly sharp edge on it that is easy to sharpen.
at Cabelas you can get a multitool pocket knife with needle nose pliers, a LED flashlight, a philips screw driver, a serrated knife, a regular knife and a flathead screw driver/can opener. its my favorite multitool knife.
i forgot, its like $10 and its stainless steel. comes with a belt case. i think it comes in black, green, red, orange and pink i think pink.
ajxs knife is wicked
how about a Garber curve Gander Mount.
gerber paraframe 1 or 2 1 is the bigger of the two
multi tools pocket knives make great everyday carrys. very useful tools
i wish i knew a good place to get boy scout 4-inch multi tools
i have a swiss army knife and it has a scissors, a can opener, two blades, a bottle opener and a nail file/ fish pliers
a good pocketknife is the letherman micra.it’s small folds to be about 2.5 inches long has 9 uses and costs about 19.99
I have a bsa blue pocket knife that is so good and you can buy it at your local scouting store
I have a yellow, victorinox, BSA, glow in the dark, climbers, swiss army knife. It has large and small blades, a bottle opener/wire stripper/wire bender/screwdriver, a can opener, scissors, a hole punch, a hook, a corkscrew, a toothpick, tweezers, and a clip to clip it on to your belt. On the front there is a BSA symbol and a vitorinox symbol. it’s a sick knife!
hey, I have a $10, single, locking blade knife. It’s really better in some ways then those $50 multi-tools you buy at the huge camping outlets. You really only need a inexpensive locking blade. really.
could someone QUOTE the regulation that states ” Fixed blade knives are not allowed in scouting”. Which manual, and passage please!
absoluteley none they just dont want us throwing them and yes i know what you meen
I use a Sharper Image knife. Now, I know that their known for making
lights, and fans, but this is a good knife!
Hammer-head attachment with nail remover, star-head screw-driver, flat-head, saw, file, pliers, wire cutters, and the classic knife
blade.
And get this, I found it on a back-packing trip when I was playing
capture-the-flag!
i use a victorinox huntsman it is a great pocketknife for me because it has everything i need in it as well as other tools that will come in handy sometime soon.
thanks that helps alot and it all is true i just bought a knife off your guide and now i have a great knife(along with my other 14 knifes
Where I lived previously, in *censored*, the blade length limit was 4 inches. I moved to *censored* and bought a knife that was 3.5in. but it turns out the limit here was 3 inches. Just a warning- check with your troop before buying a knife. By the way this is the knife I use (not in scouting, exceeds limit) Ozark Trail lockback knife. I bought it at Wal-Mart for $15
I use a 1957 black wenger scout that is the best knife i’ve ever used (except fixed blade, but those aren’t allowed in scouting.)
OADude,
Fixed blade knives are allowed in Scouts however a blade above 4 inches in not a wise choice. Heck I wish I bought a regular scout knife instead of the LMF II. Sure it’s a good knife but it’s a hassle to carry around.
I use a Buck 750 Red-Point, it is one of the toughest knives I’ve ever used. I would usually use a fixed-blade knife instead (I hunt& fish a lot), but you know, scouting doesn’t allow fixed-blades. But anyway, the 750 Red-Point, one of the best scouting knives ever. I’ve had it for a good 2 years, and have never had to sharpen it. And its lock is very safe for scouting stuff.
amen to the red point 750 THEY ROCK
I own an assisted opening knife (no they are not illegal) just the totally assisted blades are… Gerber is a good brand and Smith and Wesson sell cheap/good ones at Big 5 soooo…
assisted opening knives are also illegal in some states unless you are a first responder or police officer.
most assisted opening knives that I have seen have some sort of safety. I own one that has a little switch on the side that’s a safety
FOR THE LAST TIME ASSISTED OPENING KNIFES AND AUTO KNIFES ARE LEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a small swiss army knife and i’d like better one for around 15$. What brand should I choose.
if you want a good knife cheap, raise your budget a few bucks and get the Gerber Paraframe 1 for $25. It’s coated carbon-steel, so it won’t rust easily. And it’s super light, plus it’s one-handed opening/closing.
Try this:
Victorinox Swiss Army One-Hand Trekker Lockblade Pocket Knife (Black)
It can be found at Amzaon for $31.00
BE Warned the scout knives re flimsy steer clear.
Also fixed blade knives are illelgal at almost all scouting events.
Also 2: A assisted opening knife is cool but Unless you have a knife pocket in your pants or a pouch it could pop open on you.
I have lots of knives but for utility purposes i use my S.O.G. Flash 2 but i would suggest any S.O.G. knife for any situation. Another great knife is leatherman multitool which is great for a lot of jobs.
i was just on the sog site and i think their best knife is the SEAL Revolver. I would get it but its 10 inches long.
Appalachian Trail makes some pretty good knives that last a long time, don’t cost too much, and are very useful on scout campouts. I bought four knives, two of which are usefull multi-tools, for just $20. I use them all the time.
I think it is a good guide to use if you are going to buy a knive.
like me!
Well i would go with fixed bladed knife like the one i have its a KRIKT they have varry good quality knive and they are pretty cheap too.
Leatherman’s ROCK
ive got a sheffeild and boy is it useful!
Instead of a swiss army knife I also recomend a gerber fixed blade knife
Gerbers are great, im not going to lie, but i had an assited opening knife from them and the safety failed on me after about a month or so. No, it didnt cut me, but it couldve. Im ordering a fixed blade tonight to replace it, im getting the SOG field pup. gerber fixed has some good products, but theyre not grabbing me much.
got a sweet leatherman over 15 tools good blade
i ahve a fix blade knife. would i be allowed to use at scout outings?
no
I don’t think so1
i agree i dont thank so
I just got a gerber curve for Christmas
It depends on what your scout master thinks.
a basic swiss army (like a tinker or spartan) will pretty much do anything you need. keep it sharp and be careful.
i have a navaha muela flip knife. iv bin usin it 4 lik 2 yrs and it went in a river with me and fell off a boulder it was resting on and its like non scratched. i reccomend muela
Old Timer knives hold their edge better than most knives, they aren’t made no more.
I have a gerber suspention multi-tool. It is awesome and only $30.
My knife is one blade and it works well for me,it is very sharp
andworks well and it is my fith knife and itis like my matatey
very sharp and useful!!!!!!!
I have a Swiss Army Knife campers edition it’s the greatest knife I’ve ever had!!!!!!!
I got the benchmade 910 stryker locking blade. It’s sick and it is so sharp.
i have a apelachen trail locking knife.it’s great.
This more of a question the gear guy section in boys life magazine said something about a knife called the gerber curve where would you get it?
Do NOT get cheap no-brand knives. The other day, I was on a campout and someones cheap ol’ swiss army knife imitation broke and all the tools fell out. My real swiss army knife has been lasting for three years ow like it’s new. Only downside is that swiss army knives have kind of flimsy blades, so I use a leatherman now.
ya my friend got a knife @ walmart for $2 but it has served him well for all his scouting years!!!
I have a swiss knife that does everthing i need to do around the house
get a butterfly knife in chinatown…. 3 bucks………
butterfly knifes are fun.the will never break.
or a multi knife for 5 bucks, it’s really good quality.
they will last for your whole lifetime
to BBT i got a 12 function victornox swiss army knife called the tinker at target 4 $13
What is the best kind of Swiss Army Knives made by Victorinox?
i recomend thevictorino
I have two pocketnives theyÂŽre both pretty cool, try to go for well known brands like victorinox, leatherman and gerber.
Reccomendations: Victorinox Ranger and Leatherman Skeletool
I want to buy a swiss army knife $30.00 or under. I am 11 years old and want it to last at least 10 years. What one should I buy.
i have a good one wht do i do whith it
My troop won’t allow fixed blades, but i’m trying to change it. here is a reccomendation, the leatherman core.
I have a 20-fuction knife, its awsome!
Leatherman surge is probly the sturdiest tool out there. Compare it to a swiss army knife and it will feel like lead. but you get tons of tools for its weight.
Go for good brands like Clutch&Gerber, i have a small folding multi-tool with pliers and it is Awesome! my cousin also has another one by the same people and it is about $30 and is super light with three blades, a three in. a two in. and a serrated 3 inch blade.
how do you order/buy them? pleas respond
I have a REALLY NICE “Victorinox” 2 blade pocket knife. I got it for $12.99 at Seirra Outpost in reno,Nevada. Some other good places to get knives are at “Cabela’s” and “Bassproshops”. Here’s a tip: Don’t get a cheapie $2.00 knife lying on a mini mart shelf. Invest some money into a good knife. Not all good knives are that expensive!!!
I have a knife with my name engraved in it
Bigger is NOT better, I like my “BUCK” 5″ folding, lock blade, straight edge knife,it comes with its’ own pocket sheath. Easy to keep sharp and use. Cost me $29.95 from outdoor outfitter. Look on line for blades and other useful gear,ie: “Campmor”,”BassPro”,and “Cabela’s”.
were can i get a us military knive?
i gote a winchest pocetknife and it cuts thru 2 inch thick rope in about 5 minuets becase i sit at my table and i sharpen it for 2 hours it can even cut thru a fairly large branch in 20 min see ya pplz đ
My knife can cut through 2″ rope in 3 SECONDS!!!!! your knife must be dull, you do know that you can ruin a knife by sharpening it to long right??
I have a Swiss One-Handed Trekker. It is a very good Knife. I prefer the Serrated. It is a lock-blade. IT ROCKS
i have 7 pocket knives and they all rock but my favorit are my swiss army knife and my lock back
go to cabelas for a knife they have great deals i got a cabelas swiss army knife for only 5 bucks and it rocks
I have way cool wal-mart knife That i found in the boy scout latrine in camp when I was eating my dinner in there
i have a swiss army knife and i got it on june 6th for my birth day and shortley after like 4 days after was ranked up to weblows ow i almost forgot i got a gardener with the original swiss army knife
I have a SOG flash 2 and its a great knife the spring assist helps with opening, a lock blade makes it safe, along with a open safty keeps it from opening in your pocket it is light and very durable. And best of all its made in the USA!!!!
When backpacking to a campsite that doesn’t have a definitive latrine or other outside toilet, a temporary latrine must be dug and built. Traditional spades and long handle shovels are too tedious to carry on a hike. What is the best and most reliable folding and collapsible spade or backpacking shovel which can be attached to a backpack for the digging of a cathole or temporary latrine at a campsite when no other toilet facilities are within reasonable walking distance of a campsite? Thank you for your advice.
Does the Totem’ Chip Boy Scout Skill Requirements specify the safe use of a long handle axe or a short handle camping hatchet? What is the best camping axe for use in cutting firewood for a campout?
Try the Swiss Tool Spirit S by Victorinox. I have used it for more than a year and it is all I could ever ask. I carry it with me wherever I go. It is a little pricey, but it is definitely worth it!
I am getting a one- handed trekker and which is better the serrated or non
I dont agree with the boyscout law about no sheath knives. I would rather have a small fixed blade than a folder.
i have a victorinox one hand non serrated trekker that has a saw can opener bottle opener and more and nice sized locking blade even though it has tools
i just got a victorinox poketknife at wal mart for about $10
if your goin to get a knife get a buck you get a life time waranty and their acome i have a buck redpoint 750
i prefer the victorinox pocket pal. a small, sharp blade, and a big, mean, ol’, sharp blade (big blade, sharp too.)
Now after doing a ton of research i am thinking about buying a Leatherman Charge TTi. Would this multi-tool be better suited for outdoor use?
i am thinking about buying a Powerplay pt-540. I have two questions. First of all what does a lifetime limited warranty mean? Secondly is this a good multi-tool for me? I have been reading and some sites say it is more for indoor usage. I want to use this mulit-tool outside and i am not sure if this is the right tool for me. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. I would also appreciate it if anyone would give me suggestions on what a good tool would be for an outdoors man like myself.
I have a bsa knife. It is real good. Also I have five more knifes!!!!!
i got a winchester fixed blade knife four years ago. it came out of the box razor sharp, and ive kept that keen up as long as i’ve had it. its heavy enough to be used as a hand axe of sorts which suits my needs. it is a fixed blade belt knife, and so is banned by most troops, but this is a long hasting, hard working knife.
i have a swiss army recruit knife that i really like. no locking blade though. and i thought that sheath knives are not allowed in boy scouts.
-Mr. Skunkmeadowjr
i have a frounter it has a irish made blade it super sharp
i cut my figure on it and had 4 stites haha true
I love Swith and Wesson it has cool designs and a good blade

i have 5 knives there all great but one has a curved handle it realy fits your hand
I have the Swiss Army SwissChamp. I watched a video on Youtube about all the tools and features it has. I learned about a few I didn’t even know were on there! It’s a little expensive, but you’ll won’t need another knife again!
i love knives
I have a walmart knive it is a ozark trails. It works prity good if you yose it right.I recamend ozark knives.
be careful on what you buy at walmart! it may be cheap but some things are just junk in a plastic box with a price sticker on it (nothin’ agains’t walmart though). when it comes to things like knives i would get one that is made from a quality knife maker such as Gerber, Leatherman, SOG, Kershaw, CRKT, Victorianox, and so on. in my opinion you get what you pay for. eitherway be careful and keep em’ sharp.
kershaw knives work pretty well for normal camp use. the victornox camper is a very good multi-tool. I found the Buck Diamondback knife for 16 bucks plus 8 bucks shipping with insurance
COOL
i have a gerber bolt action knife my dad gave to me, it’s 25+ years old and he only had to sharpen it once. it holds an edge well and is very durable i reccomend GERBER legendary blades as a knife choince
if you do whitling alot get a knife with a lock. a regular one could slip a chop off your finger.
unforunately, the gear guy doesnt mention that most troops forbid fixed blades. not all, but most.
I love my leatherman charge al.
i already have a Victorianox multi-tool, but this is the great for anyone who does not have knife yet
I just got a Buck Multi-tool,and it is great. The blade is 3 inches and razor sharp. It is really comfortable to hold and I guess that it will serve me well.I payed 30 dollars for it and has a rugged sheath.Blade open it is 7inches long and 4inches closed, overall. I think that it,the unit was a good investment. What I really like about it is that it feels comfortable to wear it on the waist. The Buck Multi-tool is comprised of Screwdriver,Pliers,Sissors, and a 3inch razor sharp blade. It weighs about half a pound.Maybe,a little less,I do not know for sure. This is a good buy for sure, and I would recamend it for sure.
ruko is the way to go i have used them at every camp i go to they have durible blades and long lasting sharpness.
I have a Leatherman Surge. It’s really cool because it can almost anything and all the attachments lock. I use it for everything. It weighs about as much as a brick though.
I have Buck Prince and it is nice
You are able to open most (if not all) GERBER multi-tools to the pliers function with one hand. This Is a very useful feature when one hand is holding something else. I have not seen this is any other multi tool. My GERBER is 10+ years old and with me every day. I have needed replacement sheathes and a latch mechanism replaced which GERBER shipped to me with out cost. I was able to replace latch myself but they offered to do so with out cost for me. I would recomend this multi tool to anyone.
As for pocket knives there is only one choice for a durable unit, a VICTIORINOX swiss army knife. Also owned and carried daily by me for too many years to count.
Get a USMC Ka-Bar short. Best knife in the world!
haha Ka-bar’s are amazing, they are made by Cutco which also makes a nice Pocket knife, (Cutco’s guarentee is the best in the world as well.)
I perfer the GERBER brand the most.
If you want an awesome knife get a SOG!
I am an eagle scout, and I have a Gerber Auto-plier that has been on literally every campout I have been on since I got it 6 years ago. (except philmont.) It has everything I need, except possibly a saw, and is very sturdy, but heavy. and it is very entertaining to watch people try to put away the spring loaded pliers.
hey guy named me, leatherman has a 25 year warranty! not 50!
If I had to recommend a multitool brand, go with the Leatherman Wave. It has 3 fold out locking blades which is a got-to-have because sometimes when you wital the blade folds back and you could cut yourself.(I had to learn that the hard way)It comes with a 25 year warranty and my friend seems to love it.And if you think the Wave is to exspensive, think about getting the Blast.
I got the best multitool for christmas. At $30 it is no exactly cheap but the Gerber suspension is awesome. It also has locking tools.
For This 08 Christmas I Got 3 Set Of Winchester Knifes. In It There Was 2 Folding Knifes And One Knife that Has to be held in a sheath.I also got a Victorianox swiss army knife that came with a small classic swiss army knife. And the longest lasting knife I have ever used is a winchester knife. And If you going to buy a knife buy a winchester knife. From , babyking21
i have a bsa knife cost 55 bucks and icut my self twice and got it taken away
i think all knives are cool insamium in the cranium ! dawg!!!
i got a sweet $50 bsa knife but i aint used it thouge
I have a pocket knife that I got for $9 at walmart and it has sooooo many different tools on it. the only problem was that when i bought it, the knife was so dull it was literally rounded on the blade! but i sharpened it and it works great!
swiss army knives are okay i juss found mine and its okay……….. but i still like my buck the best and my case knives
okay i have somethin to say about tomahawk pocket knifes….. if you get one of those there a pretty good knife. but you do not neeed to flip it open very hard because if you do that it will break. i did that and mine broke into pieces. i really like gerber utilitiey knifes they are pretty good for utilities with the plires and the mini saw and the screw drivers and what not. i also like my buck knife a lot it works good on the farm and i like case knifes to carry around
I like to use a swiss army. All the bells and stuff are good
I like knifes!!!!!!!!
and another note is that the Gerber was only like 10 bucks. IDK how much the Skeletool is because i got it as a gift but i think its $50 or 60
I have a LEatherman Skeletool. Its a really good knife because it has the pliers, screw driver ETC, but it has a large enough locking balde on the outside. Most have nonlocking plades that you need to open and close the pliers to get at it. I used to have a swiss but sombody stole it. I also have a gerber lock back with a serrated blade that is pretty good.
i had a swiss army knife but i lost it đ
I have a Victorianox knife, an old BSA knife, and an SOG knife. SOG is good if you want a pocket knife that lasts for a while and is bigger.
Benchmade knives are great. They get a little pricey, but htey do have models of $30 or less. I have a Benchmade Benchmite II knife which costs around $35.
When buying a knife, choose a Swiss Army knife with the scissor tool. It can come in a lot of handy. First of all, you can use it to clip hangnails you might get when collecting wood. Also, you can use it to cut fishing line on fishing trips and twine while camping so you do not dull the actual blade. On the topic of dulling blade, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT whittle with this knife because it will dull the blade so fast you won’t know it hit you, especially if the knife is some cheap genaric brand. Thanks for listening.
I have two knives that I use a lot. One is an Old-style scout knife and one is a good quality swiss army knife that I bought at a day camp.
I think a good survival knife should be between 4 inches and 7 inches
This article is obviously somewhat outdated-especially the part where it says that multitool blades don’t lock. Maybe the wimpy Swiss Army knife blades don’t, but all the multitools I’ve ever bought have lockback blades, pliers, and screwdrivers.
I have one Leatherman multi, two Gerber multis, and an El Cheapo lockblade that I picked up in Columbia. I broke the Leatherman, but you can’t beat that 25 year warranty. El Cheapo is actually my favorite, but I use multitools more often, so I carry my Gerber. The Gerber is pobably the sharpeest knife in the house- still.
buck knives are they way to go
I have a G 96 that my cousin gave me when we were hunting
i keep a swiss camper, but prefer lockbacks. saving up for a leatherman skeletool.
leatherman is the way to go wave has a 50 year warenty
I’m going to get an Explorer knife soon.
I got a pretty good swiss a walmart that comes with a smaller one. It’s pretty good even tho I lost the small one
I have a Buck knife that does everything I need it to do.
i have a pocket nife just a small one that does everything that i need.I only paid $15 for it
I have a small bush craft knife that has always worked well I recomend one
I have a one-blade $4.99 knife that I bought in the sawgrass holiday park, and it has been very sharp throughout the two years that I have had it . I do not reccomend buying cheap knives in souvenier shops, but sometimes there are some good quality knives in unlikely places. Always try to find something that you do not have to save up for years for, but still is a brand name quality knife. I never like to spend more than $30 on knives. Also, valor is a great knife company that I reccomend.
Cool! Thanks for the advice, Mr. Kummerfeldt! I have a 3-blade knife. I don’t know what brand it is, as it doesn’t have a logo on it. It has a cool safety feature on it: all the blades lock in place when they’re open, so they won’t shut on my hand. It also has a compass, which is kind of annoying because the needle always points toward the blades. It’s cool, though.
I have a genaric gerber and it works like a charm but can be a little lose so i have to tighen up the blades so dont get generic knifes they break like crazy. Buy name brand.
I have a little blue knife with one blade that works well but I should try a stronger one.
i have a Columbia River lock back single bladed knife, it rocks. i personally dislike multi tools, i prefer lock backs. if you want a good quality knife for under 25 bucks, then get this one at Walmart. anywhere else it costs like 55 bucks, if you do get this knife, be sure to oil it every once in a while.
that was good edvise!by the way,my dad has a mulitool.your edvise rocks!!!
Hey are we alo
The Buck Whitaker multitool is great. It has the perfect blade for anything that you’ll actually need to do in Scouts. It’s always in my pocket.
Don’t buy swich-blades or single blade knives.(the more things in it the better)
I use a Cold Steel SRK that is a real knife not some knife for a little kid. I carry it on my belt and have never had it come in on me, that is the stupidest thing I ever heard.
i suggest the benchmade 530sbk
i now have a geber one-handed lockback that is my constant companion
I like Gerber (usually more expensive) Remington, and just recently i’ve been using Maxam. I love that one.
i own a rambo knife(more like a machete)
I have a leatherman that cost 130 bucks it totally does the job
buck knives rock
frost cuttlery is the best
Smith and wesson SWAT tactical Tanto blade… Looks really cool, really sharp, and good mechanics. Pretty cheap too, 16 at Big 5. Too bad my friend broke mine.
I use a $10 ozark trail knife. it’s amazing with a 3.25 inch blade. i bought it at Wal-mart:)
i have a wegner
i got a knife from a boy scout popcorn sale a couple years back and its been doin evrything i want ever since
i have tried so many knife brands but i still like a good old timer
I have a gerber mini paraframer 2.
i own a columbia river lockblade with a saftey.
i hav an awsome duloth tradeing lock blade
it is cool
i have a BSA whittling knife. it does the job good. i reccomend buying it.
i personally believe that victorinox ( the makers of the ORIGINAL swiss army knife) are by far the best and most convenient. i carry mine everywhere- except school
leatherman are a very good quality knife. Im only in highschool and i use it where ever i go except school. I purchased a leatherman wave and i think its one of the best investments i made. i also bought a leatherman squirt so i could keep it on a key chain
i love to collect swiss army knives. The one i probablly use the most is my huntsman
I have had my Wal-Mart brand knife for about 3 years now and i keep the thing nice and sharp and clean and it seems to work the best for me. i think i bought the knife for under 10 bucks so if i finally lose the thing im not out much.
i agree
I have a Leatherman.
I collect knives. right now I have sixteen. my favorite one is a camoflouge lockback. I bought for 5 dollars about three months ago and I still haven’t had to sharpen it!
Leatherman and Swiss Army rock!
I have a serrated knife and it isn’t the best knife for cutting rope, but when it comes to cutting wood this knife does a fine job.
I got my pocketknife from my dad its worth maybe 5 bucks but its still a really good knife
make sure you know what your geting, be sure it does what you want it to do and it’s under $25.00
Pocket-knifes are really dangerous if you don’t no how to use it.
I ALSO HAVE A FEW OTB BLADES
I say step aside all other knives. The true penknife has arrived because I have in my possesion The (Drum Roll) Wenger Giant Swiss Army Knifeâą V1.0
16999
All those knives sound really cool and expincive, but they don’t stay sharp allthat long.
I have 3 knives a swiss army and anouther one given to me by my neighbor, but I just bought a scout knife. It is awsome!
AWSOME
I have a Spyderco lockable blade knife and it is just good for everything.
My friends bought switchblades in Scout Camp at Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan. I believe they are illegal in my state, but they still use them on camp outs. I wish i can get one, they seem quite handy, but they could switch out on me accidentally, in addition to their bad rap and history. I’m torn.
I love Gerber knives. my only pocket knife was just blown away in the Little Sioux tornadoe and I need a new knife. Any suggestions?
my friend has a hatchet with a knife in the handle that u just pull out
and the normal price of the huntsman is 60 bucks but if u buy it where i showed ya u get it fur 23 bucks sweet eh!
If you want a good knife that stays sharp even after a few years within purchase, get a leatherman. They all have great tools and locking systems. A few boy scouts that I know have a leatherman, usually a blast or fuse. I didn’t stop there; I bought the leatherman wave, with a straight knife, serrated knife, needlenose pliers, regular pliers, shear cutters, wire cutters, five screwdrivers, a lanyard ring. scissors, wire stripper, can opener, ruler (inches and centimeters), wood saw, metal saw, diamond coated file, wood/metal file, and a leather sheath.
gerbes are great knives!!!!!!
Buck is the way to go. I own a Buck 110 folding hunter, and it is the best knife I have. It came presharpened, and it was sharper than my Kershaw. This knife is about $50, but it is worth it. It is a really nice investment.
The cabela’s bargain cave has great deals. I got a Buck Pro Line Knife for $15.00 the normal price is around 40 dolors.
carbon steel in still the most useful blade, and you can use with flint to strike up a fire
Kershaw chives are in!
hi i think big 5 is the way to go i got an $50.00 knife there for $15.00
helpful , though i would like to know the features
They are the best, and can always get you unstuck or out of trouble
I think gerber knives are the best, they are sharp, and stay sharp.
You can get them at Wallmart you know.
Leathermans are the best knives in the world. The metal is good. I reccomend the Leatherman Blast Multi-Tool, and the Leatherman e301. Both are locking and the e301 is single blade, although it does have carabiner/bottle opener. I have both and they are very good. They stay sharp and sharpen easily.
i have a leatherman folding nife, locks in place, liteweight great for serious user. I recomend Leatherman brand nifes.
For my Bar Mitztva i got a really good knife that folds out into pliers
My knife is real helpful for carving sticks and surviving in the wild
pick a knife that fits your hand not too big or to small. if you don’t you will get blisters i know from experince.
I got a multi-tool for my last birthday and it has been awesome. It does whatever I need it to and it is light. I carry my locking blade knife with me too, it is also very handy, but multi-tools are the way to go.
carolina knives r pretty vice along with buck knives i have both
Swiss Army Knifes Are The Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
Thats a good deal for a 75-piece tool. Do you know what all the tools are?
I’ve got a Swiss Army knife. It’s been really helpful on camp-outs and it’s cheep. Another thing that makes it handy is that it’s glow-in-the-dark so I never lose it.
swiss army knifes are asome!
what knife for 15 bucks?
it would be kool to see some knife reviews.
A lock blade can be good when using your knife point (such as when whittling holes in things), however, for simple woodcarving and ninety percent of the other uses of a pocket knife a standard folding blade is generally fine, especially if you practice standard knife safety when using it. I’ve carried a knife for over 20 years and while I have cut myself on occasion, can’t remember a single time it’s been because the blade folded on me. (Though I do have a friend who buried his blade in his thigh because he was playing with the locking feature).
As for the huge multi-tools, ensure that the handle isn’t too big to be unwieldly. The fatter the ‘pocket’ knife, the easier it can be for it to slip out of your hand while using it, meaning the more ‘uses’ advertised, the less useful it can sometimes become.
If you get a pocket or folding knife it should have a lock-blade feature. You can get a bad cut from it folding up on you if you don’t. I prefure one bladed lock blades or fixed blades.
i have a really nice pocket knife
The Gerber multitools are very well rated I carry the proscout 600 . I also carry a Benchmade 705 that does every thing I need. Sadly they no longer make this one. Check EBAY. I chose these after reading a survival website.
Get an old one
i keep all my knives at razor blade quality
have u herad about the $1000 75-peice multitool?
for knifes i like just a single blade fine edge knife that is always razor sharp.
Cool. I have a nice knife. I love it.
which one is better the multi-tools with pliers or all-purpose folding pocketknives?
I suggest a knife that small & light weight + it should have a lock blade.
Some of these can be found at most sporting good stores.
I have a nice and sharp pocketknife
I love knives! there one of my faverate thihgs to collect.
I SUGGEST THE BSA KNIFE
