Most pilots would call someone who flies right into the eye of a hurricane crazy. But that’s what these Air Force reservists of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron in Biloxi, Miss., do for a living.
Boys’ Life first told you about these guys in August 2010. Known as the Hurricane Hunters, these fearless aviators fly into major storms to gather the data forecasters need to warn communities and save lives.
A documentary series on The Weather Channel called “Hurricane Hunters” takes viewers along for the ride. The show puts you right in the cockpit as these specially equipped WC-130J Hercules aircraft get pounded by some of the most violent weather on the planet.
The second season of “Hurricane Hunters” premieres June 10, 2013. Tune in and see extreme aviation and meteorology in action at 9 p.m. EDT Monday nights on The Weather Channel. Click here to watch episodes or learn more.
