Pokemon Diamond and Pearl game review

Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl begin much like any Pokemon game — you’re a kid who dreams of training Pokemon, and you run into a kindly professor who makes that dream come true. In this case the professor is named Rowan, not Oak or Elm, the professors from past Pokemon games.

THE LOWDOWN

Graphics: 7.0

Sound: 6.0

Gameplay: 9.0

Value: 9.0

Overall Score: 8.0 out of 10.0

Pros: The best thing about Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl is that they look and feel like a good old Pokemon game. The controls are the same, the goals are the same and the play is similar.

Cons: The new monsters are not especially cool, and some changes to the game aren’t that fun.

There are other story changes as well.

In the past, games began with the professor inviting you to his lab and giving you a Pokemon. As Diamond and Pearl open, you and a friend are exploring by a lake. You find a briefcase in tall grass and are attacked by two bird Pokemon called Starlys. Fortunately for you, that briefcase belonged to Professor Rowan, and you find three Pokeballs inside.

Your string of good fortune continues because after you defeat the wild Starlys, Professor Rowan informs you that the Pokemon you used on the Starlys has bonded with you.

Thus begins two Pokemon journeys: yours and your friend’s. (I’m not sure what your friend’s name will be. The game offers the names Barry and Tyson, among others. I named my friend Doofus, and he lived up to his name.)

You walk from town to town in a land called Sinnoh finding, capturing and training little monsters that you then enter in fights with other Pokemon. Sinnoh is vast and has some really fun puzzles, and some of the gyms make great use of the DS’s ability to render 3D.

As in other Pokemon games, winning fights earns you money, and it earns your Pokemon experience points that make them stronger and sometimes evolves them into more advanced versions of themselves.

One thing Pokemon games have always done right and continue to do right is to offer a certain rock-paper-scissors approach to combat. In many of the past games, you chose between a Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur for your first beast. If you took Charmander, a dragon, you could cook Bulbasaur, the plant Pokemon, in fights—but Squirtle, the water Pokemon, had your number. Squirtle, however, was vulnerable to Bulbasaur’s plant attacks. It all evened out.

Diamond and Pearl have that same rock-paper-scissors balance. The first three Pokemon are fire, water and plant creatures: Chimchar, Piplup and Turtwig.

One thing that stands out about Diamond and Pearl on Nintendo DS is how similar they are to the old Game Boy games. They still have the same turn-based fighting system, the same basic exploration and dialog controls. The game has changed only on the surface.

You can control some parts of Diamond and Pearl using the touch pad controls on the bottom screen, but I found it wasn’t worth the trouble. I played the game using standard Game Boy controls.

Instead of using the select and start buttons to bring out registered items, look for inventory and access your Pokedex, you now have X and Y buttons.

In past Pokemon games, you turned berries into blocks to feed them to your Pokemon. You did this by playing a mini-game in which you pressed a button as a centrifuge spun your berries around.

In Diamond and Pearl, the berry blender is replaced with a pot in which you stir your berries using your stylus as you cook them into Poffins. It’s a cute game that’s not bad, but it’s not especially fun, either.

Overall, if you liked past Pokemon adventures, you should like Diamond and Pearl. They preserve the old games well.

Change Can Be Good: Diamond and Pearl introduce some cool changes. One of these is a new Pokeball called a Heal Ball that lets you catch, heal and use wild Pokemon on the fly. If you’re going into an area where your favorite Pokemon run wild, you can leave an open slot in your party and catch that Pokemon with a Heal Ball. As soon as it’s yours, you can use it.

The biggest changes involve DS’s WiFi ability. In the past, you either needed to link Game Boys with a cable in order to battle other players or swap Pokemon with a friend. Later, Nintendo released a wireless controller for Game Boy, but you still needed to have your friends right there to swap or fight.

DS, with its WiFi compatibility, lets you take fights to the Internet. There’s even a wireless headset that lets you talk to friends as you battle them.

And Change Can Be Not-So-Good: If there’s one place Diamond and Pearl fall a bit flat, it’s in the area of new monsters. Between them, Diamond and Pearl offer more than 100 new monsters to collect. But these new monsters aren’t as cool as most of the originals. You begin with Turtwig, an adorable baby turtle with a tree growing from its head; Chimchar, a baby monkey with a flame on its tail; and Piplup, a baby penguin.

Turtwig

Turtwig, seen here in concept art, is one of the new and overly adorable starter creatures in Diamond and Pearl. He’s sort of a replacement for Bulbasaur.

These creatures are too cute to be cool — or even evolve into something cool.

Of course, there were some goofy original Pokemon. Let’s face it—Mr. Mime was downright embarrassing. But the new monsters include Burmy, which looks like a weed and evolves into Wormadam, which looks like a Chia Pet. That’s not to say you can’t get a kick out of the Diamond and Pearl Pokemon: Nintendo has added new animations to the mix, some of which have hilarious results. The one that really got me is the animation for Machop. It’s supposed to look like he’s boxing, but to me, it looks like he’s making funny duck-like noises by placing his right hand in his armpit and flapping his left arm over it.

On a less comical note, Nintendo has expanded the Pokemon contests in Diamond and Pearl, making them a bit dull.

Ok… today i’m going to my homeschool PE for a few hours, BUT! expect the special update very, very, soon… but, for now, back to the main article for today: Pokemon Diamond and Paerl. Here’s a quick update on getting Drifloon faster: As you all know, Drifloon appears at the Valley Windworks every Friday, and it is at Lv.22, BUT there is a way to get tons and tons of these little balloons… change the day on your DS main screen! That’s right, if you change the day on your DS setting to Friday, you get a Drifloon in your Game! And, after you catch it, just go to the DS main setting screen, and, put it to next week’s Friday! It’s a good trick, and, lots of rare Pokemon for the newbies 😉

And, by the way, remember i’m always open to questions, and always open for comments. When sending me a comment or question, just make sure the first words of your Comment are: “To Legend_Chaser”

Hope your future questions are answered! And, like i always supply, some advice for your Pokemon games… Trying to evolve a fairly low-level Pokemon? Is the Day Care too slow for you? Try giving it an Exp.Share, then try facing some strong Trainers, like the Elite Four, to get it Exp. This should get it evolving A LOT quicker than just putting it in the Day Care!

Well, Shiny Hunter, the best way to get a Shiny is… try Not to get one. Make sure you have lots of Balls in your Pack, by the way. And when i say Not to get them, i mean don’t waste all of your time looking on the internet for some non-working cheats; just keep on doing whatever you want in your game; eventually, you may run into a Shiny! Hope this made you stop going crazy loking for ideas 😉

Ok, this one is to Ben525: One of the best tips for beating the Elite Four is right there, smack-dab in your Boy Scout Handbook: Be Prepared! Bring TONS of Hyper Potions, and lots and lots or Revives. ake sure your Pokemon have really high stats, and make sure when you enter a battle, a Pokemon that is strong against your foe is in the front of your Party. Another tip is that, before and after you face an Elite Four Member is to SAVE, SAVE, and SAVE!!!!!!!! If you lose the battle, just turn off the power, and, what do you know, a second chance!!!

  19. DIAMOND IS WAY BETTER THEN PEARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAIGLA WILL CRUSH PIAKIA!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, still thinking of subjects to make more of… if you have ideas, send them like you would normally send me something. Just a minor update, for those of you who are confused by the little symbols i the PC, like the little things on the bottom screen, when you select those symbols, some Pokemon will appear more of a dark color. This option searches for the Pokemon with those marks, ex. if you click on a Pokemon and click Mark, and choose a circle, when you are using the lower screen and search for a circle, it will make that Pokemon light up. Ihope you understood this, and i hope it helped!!! 🙂

For those of you who are annyoed by the fact that your Badges are black, and you can’t see them… there is a way to make shem shiny again :). Use your stylus and make little circles or something on them, and they’ll start to clear up again. Hope this helps any of you!!! (it sure took me a while to figure it out ;))

Ok… if i am correct, the last Gym Empoleon has beaten is the Pastoria Gym, with Crasher Wake as the Leader. If you can Fly, Fly to HeartHome City, if you haven’t been there, you have to walk. The Gym is simple: answer number questions, like adding or subtracting, then go to the Leader. The questions can be easily dealt with; but if you have trouble, i would highly suggest the Calculator Poketch App. I hope this helped, and if it didn’t, tell me where you are and what is in your way/why you can’t get there. 🙂

Pokemon fans if you have trouble with Heatran or if you don’t like girl and if don’t like boy follow these tips 1.If you plan to face any legendary just use false swipe from a high level pokemon and throw any ball (save your master ball for last ) the ball I recomend for Heatran is premeir ball I caught mine in one (pure luck)

2.Save the game in front of them if you don’t like the gender save and turn off the game. Ps.There’s this rumor that after you beat the Elite four 7 times you unlock a city. Is it true? If so can someone please tell me?

Well, not exactly on a Pokemon note, but i’ve had post no.100 and no.200 lol, kind of fun 😉 but, more of a Pokemon themed idea, have any of you tried BREEDING a Legendary Pokemon? Well, ye shan’t suceed with Palkia, or any other type of Legendary Pokemon found in D/P, but, in a far-off land called… Fiore! Yes, ye heard right… trade this mystery Pokemon from Pokemon Ranger to D/P, and e can breed it.. into, what, that is…???

Also, on Route 214, once you get the Nationel Dex, there is a forest not seen before… get through the forest… and into the cave, where the Ancient One dwells… and, by the Ancient One, I mean…GIRATINA! Once ye enter thy cave, move throughout the doors, but be warned! Don’t go back into the door you just came out of… but the path thy wish to take to Giratina may taketh a while, but it be worth ye effort. Ye best try going through any door… it really beith kind of random ;)… after ye hike, ye should meet Giratina! Be warned, ye weary travler… save, as for Giratina be at Level 70, and if ye PokeBalls run short… I dread to think of what shall happen to ye……..

Hey, i’m back again… remember, i can answer your questions… but, anyway, more on the Pokemon subject, most of you have trouble with Heatran. To get it, go up Stark Mountain with Buck, then he will take an item from the top. Go to his house in the Survival Area, he will go back to the Mountain to return the item. Go BACK to where you and Buck found the item (then Buck left) and Heatran WILL be there. It is in a small cave, like most Legendary Pokemon in D/P. Hope this helped all you struggling Heatran Fans! 🙂

LOL today, i went to the guy in the house near the Light House in SunyShore City, and brought him a Pokemon with a Niave nature, i got a Poketch App, then before i knew it, my Torterra had a Quirky nature, and i got a nother PokeApp! lol, good timing me!

Hmm… more daily events… well, in SunyShore, there is a girl who will give the first pokemon in your party a Ribbin if you answer her ‘question’ correctly. There is a different Ribbon for each day, Today being Monday, I got an Alert Ribbon. One Ribbon is given out per day; so don’t expect more 😉 .

By the way, a quick note on getting more Free PokeBalls, the dude in Solaceon Town, east of the Pokemon Center, will ask you to bring him a Pokemon befor the day is up. If you do, he will give 3 of a certain type of PokeBall, and it is really useful, for those of you who don’t like to waste 30000 Poke on Balls. I’m doing it now… the Pokemon he wants is… -drumroll please!- Kricketot! Aww… too bad for me, i don’t collect Kricketot, only Kricketune, lol. Well, maybe another day! 🙂 hope this helped!!!

Well, i am kind of bored for now… thinking about the next person to beat in my Pearl… but anyway, i’m still open for questions. Feel free to ask, i’mjust trying to help. By the way, an AWESOME ‘glitch’ in LeafGreen and FireRed is that, if you don’t have the Ntional Dex, and you try evolving certain Pokemon, like Golbat, when it tries to Evolve, it stops, bc you don’t have the National Dex yet. It’s really funny to see it all happy and what-not, then see it just staring all Mad-Eyed at you for not having that National Dex 😉 !

Hey, Weavle101, since you can answer ‘any’ question, how many ppl do you have to talk to in order to get Spiritomb? And this time, try answering it WITHOUT your little Prima guide book, lol not to be mean

Well, i’m still raising my Pokemon to higher levels and… wait, is that a Shiny Pokemon?!?! One simple way (comparing how ‘simple’ the other ways are) to catch in Shiny Pokemon, a different color Pokemon, is to use the Poke-Radar. Go into a patch of grass, not on a bike, use the Poke-Radar, and you should see some grass patches shake a bit. Go to one. It should have a somewhat rare Pokemon… depending on where you are. After you got the patch of grass you saw move, battle the Pokemon and if you want to try to get a Shiny, DON’T RUN!!! Either defeat it, or catch it. Once this is done, remember what Pokemon it was. Use a repel, and there should still be the Poke-Radar music. Try going to a patch of grass that moved furthest away frm you, that makes it easier to catch the same Pokemon you just got, battle it, latler, rinse, repeat. Once you get the hang of it, it makes more sense. After about 40 times of finding the same Pokemon in a row, you should be able to get a Shiny… but the only Shiny I ever cought was a Solrock, in my Emerald! lol

To catch Regigigas in Diamond, Migrate all the Regis from your other games (one of each Regi) to your game, then go to the SnowPoint Temple. It should be opened to you now. Go in, get throung the maze, go to Regigigas, save in front of it, battle it, catch it, F-I-N-I-S-H-E-D lol Hope this helps! 🙂
