Yoshi’s Woolly World game review
Yoshi the apple-cheeked dinosaur has always been one of Nintendo’s most lovable characters. So if you like your games cute, but also challenging, Yoshi’s Woolly World is for you.
YOSHI’S WOOLLY WORLD Nintendo for Wii U Gameplay: 8.5 Graphics: 9.0 Sound: 8.0 Replay Value: 7.5 Overall Score: 8.5 Pros: Beautiful yarn world; Yoshi Amiibo; Mole Yoshi. Cons: Not enough checkpoints; needs better story; hard to find collectibles. |
Yoshi’s even cuter this time around because he’s made of colorful yarn. But don’t let his charm fool you. He’s really tough on enemies. He particularly wants to get Kamek, the nutty Magikoopa who’s turned many of his friends into useless bundles of yarn.
Because there are some new ways to play, I’d suggest going through the first level on the easier Mellow mode. After that, you’ll be used to picking up yarn balls and aiming them at enemies. Shoot your yarn, and you’ll wrap enemies up. Baddies will become defenseless. Also, shoot clouds with question marks. Sometimes, they’ll grow to become giant platforms which get you to a new area.
Once you’re comfortable, try playing on Classic mode, the tougher way to play. Eventually, you’ll meet bosses like Miss Cluck the Insincere, a bomb-dropping chicken. More challenging is the giant Naval Piranha, who attacks you constantly. Toss bombs into Naval’s bellybutton to eliminate her.
You can play Woolly World cooperatively with a pal. For $10 extra, there’s the Yoshi Amiibo package which gives you Double Yoshi mode. The Amiibo let’s you can play with two characters when a pal isn’t around.
Yoshi’s Woolly World can be tricky to play on Classic mode. It can be frustrating, too. If, say, you don’t time a jump just right, you’ll fall and be sent back to the beginning of a level. Still, you’ll be thrilled at the game’s beauty and the way Yoshi turns into everything from a mole to a mermaid!
